This nest is located on Marine Corps Base Quantico, on an Osprey nest platform outside the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab. This nest has been active for several years. I first observed Osprey nesting in this location in 2008.
One of the ospreys abandoned this nest or something happened to it. The remaining Osprey stayed for a number of weeks and sat on the eggs by itself. That osprey eventually moved on and no chicks were ever observed at this nest. There have been no Ospreys in this nest for over a month.
This nest has been rebuilt by a pair of Ospreys and they are actively working to increase its size. The female has been remaining at the nest but is still standing. The male flew into the nest with a fish today.
One osprey has returned to this nest but aside from placing a few sticks has been sitting in the empty box for the past week. This was a very large nest during the 2014 nesting season but the nest was cleared by the power company during repairs to the power lines last winter.
