Nesting Diaries
Just the same as last year. Geese took over the nest in FEB and when they were done 4/22 no Osprey appeared
Took a while for this pair to decide to stay. Yesterday I observed incubation behavior and today it was confirmed by the way the female would not leave the nest.
Chicks should of hatched while I was gone from June 2-June 12. Upon return noticed no birds on the nest. A closer inspection found egg fragments that may indicate a chick hatched and did not survive. There were severe thunderstorms during this time.
Determined there are two eggs in nest
Attempts were made to incubate the final egg but a look at the nest yesterday confirmed the failure as there is nothing there.
I was away during the time I figured the chicks would hatch. There has been activity up to today. The storms of yesterday and today have apparently had an affect. There has been no activity today. I took a pass to photograph the nest and there is one egg left out of the three, but it has apparently been abandoned.
Incubation has been occurring for a couple of weeks. Today got a camera up in the nest to see three eggs.
Today the chick has fledged. She is practicing flying to and from the nest to the near-by pier.
Today I observed only one chick in the nest.
Today, two eagles arrived in the creek, much to the dislike of the female osprey. She left her nest and continually dive-bombed the eagles until they were forced to move on.
Today I floated by in my kayak using a GPRO camera and captured a photo of the nest displaying two eggs.
Things seem to be going well in this first time nest. Last year there was a lot of interest in this platform, but no permanent takers. This is the first time there have been eggs. Couple fought off a curious eagle the other day. Still easily spooked by humans.
