Looks like a new nest is being built in the same old tree !! However the ospreys were not observed today. We'll see if they are successful with re-building the nest. . . .

04/14/2019 by Rivergirl
This nest is now gone and the ospreys have not been seen this Spring for efforts to re-build the nest, or build it somewhere close-by.

04/13/2019 by Rivergirl
I have been observing the site of this nest on the following dates: 3/26/19, 4/1/19, 4/6/19, 4/10/19, 4/12/19. No ospreys have been seen at, or near, the site of their nest. . . The nest blew down last summer, and has not been re-built.

08/23/2018 by Rivergirl
No ospreys seen/heard in the area where the nest had been.

08/19/2018 by Rivergirl
No ospreys were seen/heard near where the nest had been on Lake Pasbehegh. on my way up and down The Maine.

08/14/2018 by Rivergirl
The weather has been amazing - heat, humidity, and quite a bit of rain. I have had some busy days the past month and was glad to have time today to walk up The Maine and look for the ospreys. The nest is gone -- and the ospreys have not been seen in the several times I have been walking past Lake Pasbehegh. There has been no evidence of the ospreys in the past month, much to my chagrin. There has been a female osprey standing on a tree limb in my backyard, within the past week, but I don't know which pair she has been a mate in. . . . I'll try 1/2 more walks to see if the Lakers are still nearby where the nest was (before it was blown down).

07/14/2018 by Rivergirl
I walked up The Maine today, to see if there was any evidence of the pair returning to Lake Pasbehegh. There were no ospreys seen/heard, and no nest evidence. It was a very hot day - about 90-96 degrees.

07/02/2018 by Rivergirl
This afternoon, it was just over 100 degrees and very humid. It was too hot to walk outside, so I drove up to the lake and sat in my car, with the AC on, for about 20 mins. The adult ospreys were not seen/heard. The weather is supposed to remain very hot/humid for another few days. I'll try and walk up The Maine and go to see if there is any osprey activity over this weekend. I really miss the adult ospreys and the chicks, too. . . .

06/29/2018 by Rivergirl
I walked up to Lake Pasbehegh and spent 30 mins. looking at the nesting area and walking down to the Lake, on the neighbors' property. The ospreys were not seen or heard today. It was very hot, about 90 degrees, and very humid. We'll see if the adults will stay in the neighborhood. . . .

06/24/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, about 9:45, it was cloudy, 80 degrees, and high humidity. The nest has fallen, or blown down, lower in the tree. We had quite a bit of rain the other day, which may have contributed to the nest disaster - it looks as though the main branch, where the nest was re-built this year, had broken off and fallen down further into the tree area. I did see the female at the "top" of the tree where the nest has been for the years I have observed it (4 yrs?). She was standing quietly. There was no phone number listed for the homeowners in the community directory, so I drove to their home and we met in the driveway! Ken and I walked down to Lake Pasbehegh, near the tree where the nest had fallen down into -- we found 2 Turkey Vultures, they flew away -- and we found two dead Osprey chicks -- eaten down to their bones (it was sooo sad. . . .). I have permission to go to the lake, to observe the current status of the nest; though it isn't very visable up in the tree. I'll give some attention to a follow-up to the nest failure and adult behavior for the remainder of the seasonal stay at Lake Pasbehegh. This has been a very stressful day-

06/21/2018 by Rivergirl
I observed the nest yesterday, about mid-day. It was sunny, no wind, and 90 degrees! Mama was standing at the edge of the nest, providing shade to the nestlings/chicks, with her wings spread out. After about 20 min. of observation, Papa arrived at the nest with a fish! There were three nestlings seen, and Mama fed them all. Papa flew off -- Mama stayed and fed the chicks. I am delighted to see this nest continue to be productive for this pair of ospreys.

06/17/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, it was 78 degrees and sunny. The female was at the right edge of the nest, "squatting". She stood up and I saw a chick! Mama stood in the nest, with her wings spread out; in a bit of time, she moved to the opposite side of the nest -- watching, I think there are two chicks. There were 4 Turkey Vultures seen in the sky -- Mama saw them, flew out of the nest and flew back in less than a minute -- with a bit of something in her talons. She stood nest-side and made shade with her wings. After an hour, I headed home -- the male Osprey wasn't seen last week or today. I'll check again soon!

06/14/2018 by Rivergirl
It has been a week since I observed the nest - there has been consistent rain and I had some commitments that took time from observing. Today, about 8:30, it was sunny and 75 degrees. The female was standing on the left edge of the nest - her behavior suggested there were chicks. She looked down into the nest, several times, did a bit of soft "talking", flapped her wings slowly and moved to the left rear of the nest - I did see a chick! There may be two. . . Mama kept looking toward the James River - she occasionally was "winging" and standing with her wings spread. Male no seen today - I observed an hr.

06/07/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, it was 70 degrees, sunny, breezy, at 9:00. The female was at the edge of the nest on the right side, she did a little "talking" -- there was a "crowd" of noisy crows nearby. . . The male osprey arrived with a fish; the female took the fish, and appeared to be feeding hatchlings. The male stood on a tall branch at the top of the nest, while the female fed on the left of the nest, then moved to the right side. The nest is so deep, hatchlings couldn't be seen, but the behavior of the adults suggested there were hatchlings.

06/03/2018 by Rivergirl
It was partly cloudy, very humid today. The female was at the edge of the nest, on the right; she moved around a bit, and walked to the opposite side of the nest and laid down. Her behavior was consistent with what has been previously observed when there are hatchlings in the nest -- it's so deep this year, that it's hard to know what might be happening. . . . As I walked down The Maine, about 30 mins. later, I heard an osprey, but didn't see it, and the male did not arrive to the area near the nest. The female was standing down in the nest, and observation time of 20-30 mins. did not provide activity at the nest, nor "talking" between the adults. The female did do some "talking" but the male was not seen or heard today. Hope he was out hunting for "dinner!"

05/28/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, it was partly cloudy, 84 degrees, and quite humid, at about 10:30. The male Osprey was on a branch to the right of the nest - no fish seen. The female was at the edge of the nest; her behavior suggested there may be hatchling(s) She then laid partly down in the nest. No talking between the two adults. The female stood up and flew away, toward the James River. The male stayed on the branch, then flew to the nest, and stood inside the nest. As I walked on my return down The Maine, one of the adults (?M) was standing quietly in the nest. A crow flew to a branch near the nest, then flew away. The Osprey mate was not seen/heard.

05/26/2018 by Rivergirl
Today was breezy, sunny, and temp. about 80 degrees; observation began about 10 a.m. The female was standing at the edge of the nest, leaning down into the nest - she then moved into the nest and laid down. An eagle flew nearby, the female did some "talking" and the eagle flew away. On my return down The Maine, the male was on a branch to the right of the nest, with a fish. The female was standing on the right edge of the nest - then she laid back down in the nest ( no hatchling was seen).

05/22/2018 by Rivergirl
The female was at the nest - quiet. The male flew to the nest with a fish; the female flew off to the James River. The male dropped the fish down into the nest. He stood in the nest - the female flew into the nest (no fish), and the male flew out. The male returned with a big, long "stick" that got stuck at the side of the nest. The female flew off, the male went down into the nest, and the stick was "stuck" at the edge of the nest. The female returned to the nest; not with a fish.

05/19/2018 by Rivergirl
The chick, and the female were seen in the nest. I heard an osprey, but didn't see it. On my way down The Maine, both the chick and female were observed in the nest, and light rain sprinkles began.

05/17/2018 by Rivergirl
Observation time was a bit later than usual (11:30). Hatchling was sitting in the nest, looking skyward, and "talking" a little bit. On my way down The Maine, light rain began, and the hatchling was seen looking out of the nest, in the rain.

05/11/2018 by Rivergirl
Female was at the nest, keeping eggs? and the hatchling comfy. Male was not seen or heard. It was sunny, temp. 60 degrees. On my return down The Maine, the female was standing in the nest, quietly. The male was not seen or heard on my observation time today.

05/09/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, the female was down in the nest, and was observed to stand up. She stood quietly for several minutes, then laid down in the nest again and did not move. The hatchling was not seen today, but it was in the morning, with cloudy sky, and "mom" down in the nest. The male was not seen/heard.

05/04/2018 by Rivergirl
Hatchling seen in the nest today! Female appeared to be incubating and the male was standing on a limb above the nest, "talking" to the female.

04/30/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, the female was down in the nest, incubation in progress, I think. She was "talking" to the male, as he landed on a tall dead limb above the nest, on the right. Both adults were then calm and quiet. The female stood up in the nest, moved around slowly and laid back down.

04/27/2018 by Rivergirl
Both ospreys were at the nest-then the male flew off. He flew back to the nest, the female flew off - male sat down in the nest. On my return down The Maine, one adult was sitting down, deep in the nest - no activity or communication observed.

04/21/2018 by Rivergirl
It was a sunny day, about 10:30 in the morning, and the female was standing in the nest, and moving around. The male arrived and landed on a branch to the right of the nest tree; he didn't have a fish and there was no communication heard. On my return down The Maine, the female was laying down in the nest, incubating eggs or keeping new hatchlings comfortable. The Male was not seen/heard.

04/15/2018 by Rivergirl
Female was on a tall branch above the nest, calm and quiet, looking down into the nest - it's quite deep. On my return down The Maine, the female was in the nest, maybe with a hatchling? The male was at the nest, then flew away, and later came back with a fish, left it at the nest, and flew off again.

04/15/2018 by Rivergirl
Female was on a tall branch above the nest, calm and quiet, looking down into the nest - it's quite deep. On my return down The Maine, the female was standing in the nest; no activity was observed. The male was at the nest, flew away, flew back with a fish, left the fish and flew off again. It may be there is a hatchling and the female was feeding it!

04/12/2018 by Rivergirl
Today it was cloudy and in the mid-60's. The female was on a tall branch above the nest. She was calm and quiet, looking down into the nest. On my return down The Maine, the female was standing in the nest - no activity observed in the nest. The nest has definitely been rebuilt this year - it's deeper and wider than last year.

04/09/2018 by Rivergirl
An adult was in a tree, on the left; no activity at the nest. On my return, the female was observed, standing in the nest, and doing lots of "talking." It was quite breezy today.

04/05/2018 by Rivergirl
An adult was standing above the nest today. Evidence of re-building the nest. The osprey was "talking" a bit, and looking around the area. On my return, there was a leaf-blowing team across the street, making much noise - the osprey flew to a tree branch near the nest and kept watching the leaf-blowing team (2 boys and a man) - lots of noise and commotion. I had to get home. . .

03/31/2018 by Rivergirl
No ospreys were seen/heard at, or near, the nest in restoration.

03/25/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, the ospreys were continuing their efforts to re-build the upper nest. I think it was the female that arrived with a twig to use in the rebuilding process.

03/22/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, both ospreys were observed - one was in the nest, with nest "material" and the other was on a branch below the nest, on the right. The nest being re-designed is the one directly above the nest that was used for many years.

08/28/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was in the mid-70's and low humidity. Neither osprey was seen/heard today. I do believe they have migrated.

08/20/2017 by Rivergirl
I have not seen this pair of ospreys at the nest since 7/30/17. The one observed at the nest on 8/16 may have been an osprey from the nearby nest on Curles Circle. My guess is that this pair of ospreys has left, and migrated. There has never been evidence of egg laying, clutch hatching, etc. for this year. They may come back to the area, and find a new nest site in the spring of 2018.

08/18/2017 by Rivergirl
Neither of the ospreys was seen/heard today. It was amazing to see one on 8/16 - for the first time since July 29th! I will observe another couple of days, to see if these ospreys have migrated.

08/16/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, there were no ospreys seen at this nest on my first stop on The Maine. On my way back down The Maine, there was an osprey at the edge of the nest at Lake Pasbehegh, with a fish. It landed briefly, then flew off and up the Lake.

08/12/2017 by Rivergirl
This morning, we had rain, but then it became sunny. I did my osprey watch from 11:45 - 1:15. Temperature was in the mid-80's, and it was very humid. There have been no ospreys at this nest since July 29th.

08/07/2017 by Rivergirl
No ospreys were seen/heard at or near the nest area. I did see and hear several ospreys near the James River, and also at Lake Pasbehegh. There were a few sprinkles, and some wind.

08/04/2017 by Rivergirl
No ospreys were seen or heard and there was no activity at the nest. Today, it was 80 degrees and sunny.

07/30/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, no ospreys were seen/heard in the area where the nest is, on Lake Pasbehegh. Temp. was about 70 degrees, sunny and breezy, at 10:15.

07/25/2017 by Rivergirl
Female was standing on a dead branch above the center of the nest. There was no activity observed, nor "talking." The male was not seen near the nest, or at the nest. There has been no evidence of egg laying, incubation, or hatching this year.

07/18/2017 by Rivergirl
There were no ospreys seen/heard today. Yesterday, as I was taking a walk, I did see the male osprey standing on a lower branch of a tree near the tree where the nest is located. There was no movement/communication observed.

07/13/2017 by Rivergirl
Today it was very hot, 90 degrees at 4:00. No ospreys were seen or heard in the nest area over about 20 mins. Too hot to stay any longer today.

07/09/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was very hot, sunny - almost 1:00 p.m. The female was at the nest, did some "talking" and then flew off. I saw an osprey fledgling fly over Lake Pasbehegh. No other adult activity at the nest area. On my walk down The Maine, there was an eagle flying over the James River, toward the Lake. It was 98 degrees when I got home!

07/05/2017 by Rivergirl
The female was on the short branch, to the left of the nest; no movement/communication. She then "talked" just a bit and flew up the lake. No activity has been observed at the nest. An osprey was heard to the left of the nest, but not seen. This was about 9:30 in the morning, cloudy, upper 70's, ~ 30 mins.

06/30/2017 by Rivergirl
Turkey Vultures were everywhere -- same as had been seen at the Riverkids nest. Crows were heard, also. The pair of ospreys were not seen/heard during observation time of ~ 30 mins.

06/27/2017 by Rivergirl
The female was on the right branch, above the nest - preening and very quiet. No other activity seen/heard for about 20 min. It was about 10 A.M., cloudy - then sunny.

06/25/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, the nest appears functional, but neither of the adults were seen/heard in the area. Did see an osprey fly over the lake, on the right of the nest, with a fish, but there was no activity observed at the nest for over 20 mins.

06/22/2017 by Rivergirl
Female was on the right branch above the nest - preening. No other activity observed. A young osprey flew over the nest area, toward the James River. Later, both ospreys were at the nest, male on the front edge of the nest, female at her previous site. No observation of behavior that eggs have been laid, and no copulation behavior. . . .

06/17/2017 by Rivergirl
The female flew to the branch above the nest; the male flew toward the James River. They communicated as he flew toward the nest, with a fish. An eagle was challenging the male! Later, both ospreys were flying above the Lake - no activity at the nest.

06/13/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was hot, sunny, and humid. During my 20 min. viewing of the Lakers' nest area, there were no ospreys seen/heard at or near the nest. This was at 10:30 in the morning.

06/12/2017 by Rivergirl
The male left the nest and flew down the lake, as I was approaching their nest site. The female was on the branch above the nest, on the right. She "talked" to the male a bit, then flew off toward the James River. No further activity/communication was observed.

06/07/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, the female was observed, standing at the nest; she flew off as I approached the Lake. One of the adults flew to the nest, did some "talking" and flew off again. The nest seems to be completely re-built!

06/02/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was hot, sunny - about 85+ degrees mid-day was when I watched the ospreys. The nest appears to be functional. The female was standing on a tree branch, below and to the right of the nest, in the shade. She did a little "talking", but there was no activity observed and the male osprey was not seen. I believe the high heat was an influencing factor.

05/30/2017 by Rivergirl
This was a very cloudy day, about 70 degrees, and a few sprinkles. The female was standing at the nest; the male arrive, but then flew off. When the male flew back to the nest, they both flew off - no "talking." One osprey came to the nest, with a fish and another osprey came to "fight" about it -- there was "talking" going on over the Lake, and the ospreys both left the nest! A female showed up with a fish, but then left and flew over the Lake, to the right of the nest. I haven't seen this behavior before!

05/28/2017 by Rivergirl
There were increasing clouds, and high breeze this morning. The female was on the branch above the nest; the male arrived at the branch on the left of the nest and they "talked" a bit. The male was preening - didn't have a fish. They both sat quietly. as I walked back down The Maine; the nest continues to "grow!"

05/24/2017 by Rivergirl
Neither osprey was at the nest, but it looked like they have been working on improving it. The male arrived with a twig, female arrived with a branch. The male flew off - the female worked with the new nest components, but the new nest efforts fell into the lake, and the female flew off. The male flew back with some moss and a stick, but his efforts were not successful - the new items fell down through the tree -- the male flew off. Rain started, so I left.

05/20/2017 by Rivergirl
One of the ospreys was on a tall, dead branch in the middle of the tree, just above the nest. Later, I heard ospreys "talking", but neither was at the nest. One osprey arrived at the nest, but then quickly flew away, into the trees and up Lake Pasbehegh. No noticeable improvement in the nest composition.

05/18/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, one of the adults was on a branch to the right of the nest; an osprey flew by, to the James River. The one at the nest was "talking", but there was no communication from the 2nd osprey. Looking at the nest from the street behind the Lake, there does appear to be some re-construction in process! I introduced myself to the new home owners and have their permission to walk in their yard to observe the nest/ospreys.

05/13/2017 by Rivergirl
One adult was on the left branch across from the nest; no movement, no communication, 2nd adult not seen or heard. The adult flew off the branch, as two eagles flew over the area. No further activity seen/heard over 20-30 min.

05/09/2017 by Rivergirl
One of the ospreys flew to a branch, below - on the right side -- the branch broke off, the osprey "dumped" it in Lake Pasbehegh! After about 5 min., one of the ospreys came to the nest, with a twig, dropped it in the nest, and flew off, up the lake. An osprey arrived at the nest with another twig. There appeared to be three ospreys at this nest (2 males??). Time is needed to know what will happen.

05/05/2017 by Rivergirl
It was about 5:30 when I headed up The Maine; cloudy, windy. No ospreys were seen/heard at, or near, the nest. I watched for about 20 min. - no activity and no ospreys. It then started raining, and I went home.

05/02/2017 by Rivergirl
I started up toward the nest - it was about 85 degrees, quite windy (about 15-20 miles per hr) and 1:00, with no clouds. An adult flew from the nest, before I got very close - there was no activity at the nest (wind may be having a negative effect on its stability). An osprey flew over the nest, with a fish, and then flew up The Maine. I could hear some "communication" but no activity at, or near, the nest. There were several crows seen, and an eagle, but no ospreys.

04/29/2017 by Rivergirl
The male was on a branch below the nest. The female was not seen, there was no nest activity. The male did some "talking", but the female was not observed in the area. During about 20 mins., there was no activity at the nest and the female was not seen. The sun had come out, the temp. was in mid-80's. We'll see what happens next!

04/26/2017 by Rivergirl
The female, I think, was on the right branch behind the nest. Re-building of the nest continues. There was some "talking" between the two ospreys; one was seen, but it didn't land in the tree or the area. The one at the nest flew up Lake Pasbehegh; think it was the female.

04/23/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, no ospreys were seen/heard - there appears to be, perhaps, a new nest, further down in the old tree. It started raining and the male flew to the top of a branch on the right, with a fish and started eating. Female not observed.

04/20/2017 by Rivergirl
This is the new pair! The female was at the nest, with building material. Male arrived, and stood on the female, then flew off, came back and stood beside the female. Same behavior was seen twice, then he flew off and didn't return. Nest-building was observed, with small tree branches (with leaves). Both flew off, returned to the nest for a few minutes, then flew off to the James River. No noise and no other ospreys seen or heard. It was cloudy, breezy, about 65 degrees, and fairly early in the day - I arrived at the nest about8:45.

04/16/2017 by Rivergirl
Female was on a branch above the nest; there has been new building material at the nest. Male was on a dead branch to the right of the nest; no talking or movement from either of them. After watching the pair for 20 minutes, it seems they may be a new pair, as their behavior is quite different than the previous duo. Both were on a branch to the right, just below the nest. The male looked quite different than the one I have seen at this nest since last spring. . . .

04/14/2017 by Rivergirl
There was a crow at the nest area! The female was on a branch to right - "talking" to the crow. After 2-3 mins., the crow flew off and the female ate the fish she had brought to the nest area. The male arrived to the same branch as the female, she flew to the nest with her fish. There was much "talking" and there were three other ospreys in the lake area, the male flew to where the other three ospreys were in the sky, and eventually returned to the nest. One of the three adults flew back to the nest area -- then flew away. It was a very noisy, busy time near the nest (which has not been completely re-built, but there is evidence of improvement).

04/10/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, both ospreys were at the nest; the male flew to the female, copulation was observed, and then the male flew to a left branch. Nest efforts do not appear successful at the old nest site. On my return, it may be that they are building a new nest on the same tree, down about mid-tree. Neither was seen on my way home.

04/07/2017 by Rivergirl
The weather today was very windy and cloudy. Neither adult was observed, nor heard, in my travels up/down The Maine.

04/04/2017 by Rivergirl
Nest re-building continues. Windy this a.m. - may have a storm later today. Female standing at the nest. An Eagle flew by. . . The male arrived and copulation appeared to be in progress. Both ospreys then flew from the nest. There was mowing at the edge of the Lake; quite noisy.

03/30/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, the female was on a branch at the nest, going up The Maine. Efforts are being made to improve the nest, but success has been limited. On my down The Maine, both ospreys were at the nest, making efforts to improve the nest.

03/27/2017 by Rivergirl
Neither of the ospreys were seen on this date- going up, or coming down, The Maine.

03/26/2017 by Rivergirl
The male was standing on the left of the nest. Some efforts for nest improvement had been made. On my way down The Maine, the female was at the nest, and the male was on a branch below the nest. No motion or communication between the pair was observed.

03/23/2017 by Rivergirl
I have not seen both ospreys at the nest. On 3/17, I saw one osprey on the branch of a tree under the nest. Today, there was an osprey perched on the side of the nest, "talking." This nest is in disrepair, as it was last year. I hope the ospreys have success with rebuilding it, or building a new nest nearby.

09/09/2016 by Rivergirl
Not sure how the 9/7 data got tripled! Ospreys were not seen today - migration is their mission. Best wishes to them 'til 2017!

09/07/2016 by Rivergirl
I believe the Lakers have migrated. Didn't see them, or hear any communication, today. It was almost 90 degrees today.

09/05/2016 by Rivergirl
No ospreys seen or heard at, or near the nest. Given the cool weather, they may have begun their migration.

09/01/2016 by Rivergirl
No ospreys seen or heard over an hour's time. There were six crows making lots of noise. . ..

08/30/2016 by Rivergirl
An adult was observed on a branch at the right of the nest -- preening. Same behavior about 20 min. later.

08/28/2016 by Rivergirl
No ospreys were observed on my walk and "visit" going up or down The Maine. It was 80+ degrees, 9:30 - 10:30.

08/26/2016 by Rivergirl
Today, no ospreys were seen, or heard, during about a 20 min. observation. Perhaps they have migrated. . . . I'll track another couple days.

08/24/2016 by Rivergirl
An osprey was on a tree branch to the right of the nest. An osprey flew down the lake, and the one on the branch followed the one flying -- no communication between them. On my return, there were no ospreys seen, no communication was heard.

08/21/2016 by Rivergirl
The female was on the same branch as on 8/16, eating a fish. No other activity. On my way down The Maine, an eagle flew above the lake, past the osprey nest. The female osprey didn't move away; stayed on the branch. No other activity observed.

08/18/2016 by Rivergirl
No ospreys at the nest or near the nest. No communication heard. I did hear ospreys on my way down The Maine, but didn't see them. Today, it was 80 degrees and cloudy; less humid.

08/16/2016 by Rivergirl
Very hot and humid today. An adult was on a branch to the right of the nest - no movement or "talking." Same behavior on my return down The Maine.

08/14/2016 by Rivergirl
A fledgling has not been seen. Today, there was an adult on a branch below the nest, on the right, in some shade. There was no activity or "talking." It was a hot time of the day, temp. about 85-90 degrees. On my return down The Maine, the same osprey had a fish and was eating it; it had returned to the shade of the tree.

08/09/2016 by Rivergirl
Adult was on a branch below the nest; no nest activity was observed. On my way back down The Maine, the adult was gone and there was no activity nor ospreys at the nest area. Construction continues at the home site.

08/01/2016 by Rivergirl
Adult on the branch above the nest; communication was heard. Think the fledgling was nearby and also 2 eagles. There was "much talking". The adult flew to the James River. On my return down The Maine, no ospreys were seen/heard.

08/01/2016 by Rivergirl
An adult was on the branch above the nest -- communication was heard, with the fledgling, I think. There were also two eagles nearby. The adult flew to the James. On my way back down The Maine, no ospreys were seen or heard near the nest -- construction work was being done on the home being built on the Lake.

07/31/2016 by Rivergirl
There were no adults at the nest and no fledgling was seen. Crows were nearby, making lots of noise.

07/26/2016 by Rivergirl
80+ degrees at 8:30. An adult was on the branch above the nest, on the right. No activity was observed. I think it was the fledgling that flew to the nest, and immediately flew away, toward the lake.

07/21/2016 by Rivergirl
Female was sitting on edge of the nest, facing the construction site. The chick/fledgling not seen - maybe it was out fishing with the male. . 20 min. later, there was no activity at the nest, but I did see an adult and a young osprey flying across the lake - maybe it was Papa Laker and the fledgling!

07/17/2016 by Rivergirl
An adult flew off to the James as I came up The Maine. No activity, or the other adult at the nest, BUT there was a brown cowbird sitting on a branch to the right of the nest. On my way home, there was an adult on the branch to the right, above the nest. It was the female, and she stayed for at least 20 min., before I went on home. No communication between the adults and the chick wasn't seen.

07/14/2016 by Rivergirl
The female was on the upper right branch above the nest. Today was very hot. The female was quiet, looking at the nest. The male was not seen or heard. The chick was not observed in the nest - it may have fledged to go fishing with the male! There was some noise at the construction site. The temperature was about 85-90 degrees with high humidity.

07/09/2016 by Rivergirl
Female was at the nest, with the chick; it was in the shade of Mom's wings/breast. Today was very warm - the Watch was late in the morning, high humidity, temperature was over 85 degrees.

07/06/2016 by Rivergirl
The weather is very humid today. Male was on the branch at the right of the nest. The female flew in (twice) with light "twigs". She "talked" to the chick, which is showing growth. There was quite a bit of noise at the property construction site today.

07/04/2016 by Rivergirl
An adult was at the nest, feeding the chick and "talking". On my way home, there was quite a bit of rain; the adult was seen in the nest.

06/30/2016 by Rivergirl
Chick was not seen. Female was sitting in the nest and male was directly above, preening. On my way down The Maine, there was a pileated woodpecker on the tree trunk under the nest, An adult moved to the left side of the nest, giving shade with its wings to the chick.

06/27/2016 by Rivergirl
Male was on a branch to left of the nest; female arrived at the nest and the chick was seen. The male provided shade for the chick.

06/24/2016 by Rivergirl
Both adults were at the nest and the chick was observed. The male's neck appears to be swollen - very strange.

06/19/2016 by Rivergirl
Adult and hatchling seen at the nest, but no "communication" between the adults. On my return down The Maine, the female was down in the nest, looking out and around -- male not seen today.

06/16/2016 by Rivergirl
Female and chick seen in the nest. Male was on a branch to the right, "talking" to the female and chick - then flew off over the James River.

06/09/2016 by Rivergirl
Female down in the nest; male flew in with a fish. Appeared chick(s) were being fed.

06/05/2016 by Rivergirl
Male on branch to left of nest; Female in nest with hatchling/chick. On my way home, the female was at the nest and male was on branch at left of the nest - "telling" a third osprey to "go away." It did.

06/03/2016 by Rivergirl
Both adults were at the nest. The hatchling was near the female, being fed! On my way home, the female and 1 (or maybe 2) hatchlings were observed at the nest. This nest is so deep - and I can't see down inside it, darn it. . ..

05/31/2016 by Rivergirl
There was horrible rain yesterday. The hatchling was seen at the nest; not the adults. On my way home on The Maine, one adult and the hatchling were observed - the other adult flew in to the nest. No major problems were seen, related to the heavy rain we had.

05/29/2016 by Rivergirl
Today was hot and sunny. The female was seen at the nest, but no activity was observed. The male was not present.

05/26/2016 by Rivergirl
Today was sunny and warm. Female showed up at the nest with a fish; she flew off - then flew back to the nest to feed the nestling(s). The male came, then flew off. Busy time!

05/23/2016 by Rivergirl
Saw a hatchling at the nest. No adults seen on my way up The Maine. On my return, about Noon, there was an adult on the branch to the left of the nest - it started sprinkling and I had to get home!

05/19/2016 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 8:30, neither adult was at, or near, the nest.

05/16/2016 by Rivergirl
On my way up The Maine, there were no adults, no activity, at the nest. On my return, down The Maine, the female was at the nest, standing over hatchlings, I think. The male was on the branch to the left, just sitting - no motion or communication.

05/14/2016 by Rivergirl
Female at the nest, very quiet. Today was very warm and breezy. On my way back down The Maine, both adults were seen; 1 at the nest, 1 on the branch to the right. No communication was heard. Their positioning is consistent with the arrival of hatchlings!

05/12/2016 by Rivergirl
The female arrived with a fish and sat on a branch near the nest. When she went to the nest, there may have been a hatchling - not sure. . . . When I walked back down The Maine, the female was at the nest - male not seen.

05/07/2016 by Rivergirl
An adult was at the nest; must have been the female. We had lots of rain the past week. Incubation appears to be in process.

05/02/2016 by Rivergirl
The female is incubating the eggs; she started "talking" to the male as it flew by the nest. The male landed on the branch to the side of the nest. The ospreys "talked" to each other.

04/27/2016 by Rivergirl
The female was observed on a branch to the left of the nest. There were a bunch of birds (don't know what they were) flying around, near the nest during about 10 min. of observation. On my return down The Maine, about 45 min. later, the female was incubating, I believe. The male was not seen on the return.

04/24/2016 by Rivergirl
Today, the female was incubating eggs; the male flew into the nest with a fish. Both stayed at the nest, "talking" to each other. After a bit of time, the male flapped his wings and flew off.

04/21/2016 by Rivergirl
Late in the afternoon, about 5:30, both ospreys were at the nest. It seems the eggs have been laid and the female is incubating them.

04/17/2016 by Rivergirl
One was at the nest, and the other on the branch to the left of the nest on a beautiful Spring day. The one at the nest flew off, just as I walked by the lake. The nest seems to be quite stable.

04/14/2016 by Rivergirl
The size of the nest has grown! Female was at the nest. Male came, with fish, to branch near the nest. As he was eating, the female flew off to "hunt" - I assume!

04/08/2016 by Rivergirl
No construction at the Lake site today. Female was observed at the nest, both on the way up and down The Maine today.

04/07/2016 by Rivergirl
8:30 a.m.: female was on the branch below the nest; male at the nest, flapping its wings. On the return down The Maine, the building crew was on-site - neither osprey was observed. Weather was windy and rainy.

04/03/2016 by Rivergirl
The nest-rebuilding is continuing and looks to be quite successful. Both ospreys were observed at the nest - different times, working on the nest design. They don't seem too distracted by the building crew.

03/31/2016 by Rivergirl
No ospreys were seen at the nest this morning, but there is evidence that nest-building is being worked on. A new home is being built on the property at the lake where the nest is located. Trees were being taken down today; that would explain why the ospreys have not been seen today.

03/26/2016 by Rivergirl
Today, it looks like a new nest may be being built in the old nest tree. Both ospreys were seen at the nest site. Mating behavior was observed, but not copulation.

03/24/2016 by Rivergirl
Both ospreys were at the tree nest site, on branches just above where the nest was last year. On my way back down The Maine, neither one was at, or near the nest, and neither was seen/heard.

03/20/2016 by Rivergirl
Two ospreys were seen and heard near the nest. However, no nest progress was observed and neither one was at the nest.

03/17/2016 by Rivergirl
There was one osprey sitting on a branch at the old nest site. No change seen in the nest re-building.

03/15/2016 by Rivergirl
No ospreys seen as I walked up/down The Maine today. There was a pileated woodpecker at the site, as I was walking down The Maine.

03/12/2016 by Rivergirl
There was an osprey on a branch, above the nest re-make, eating a fish.

03/11/2016 by Rivergirl
3/11/16 I didn't see the ospreys in the nest area, but see a couple of ospreys in the sky, and there was evidence they were beginning to try and rebuild the nest at the old site, as they did last year. We'll see!

03/11/2016 by Rivergirl
3/11/16 I didn't see the ospreys in the nest area, but see a couple of ospreys in the sky, and there was evidence they were beginning to try and rebuild the nest at the old site, as they did last year. We'll see!

03/06/2016 by Rivergirl
The nest blew away over the winter - completely. Have not seen the ospreys yet this season.

08/29/2015 by Rivergirl
On 8/22, and several times since then, no ospreys have been observed at the nest or nearby. Migration is in process, I assume.

08/19/2015 by Rivergirl
Today, the male was seen on a branch below the nest, on the right side. He sat there for the observation - about 20 mins.

08/13/2015 by Rivergirl
No ospreys observed or heard at the nest area.

08/10/2015 by Rivergirl
No adults nor fledglings seen or heard in the nest area.

08/07/2015 by Rivergirl
Both adults were at the nest; one on either side. One was eating a fish! No fledglings seen.

08/05/2015 by Rivergirl
no ospreys seen or heard - it was very humid and hot.

08/01/2015 by Rivergirl
On my way up the street, there was a fledgling on a branch to the left of the nest; it "talked" just a little. On my way back home, 45 min. later, there were no ospreys seen or heard , at or near the nest.

07/26/2015 by Rivergirl
At about 8:30 A.M., adult male was at the nest; he flew off after 5 min. No other activity. Walking back down The Maine, about 30 min later, no ospreys or activity at the nest.

07/24/2015 by Rivergirl
No ospreys were seen, or heard, on either observation -30 min. time frame.

07/19/2015 by Rivergirl
Today, the male was on the branch to the left of the nest, eating. The female flew into the nest and worked on design, moving a couple twigs around. Both were "talking." On my return down The Maine, the female was on a side branch; male was gone.

07/17/2015 by Rivergirl
No adults or fledglings were observed or heard at, or near, the nest.

07/09/2015 by Rivergirl
Adult male on branch at left of the nest; he was eating a fish. One fledgling was seen at the nest. It was a hot morning.

07/02/2015 by Rivergirl
Adult and two fledglings at the nest. Adult was feeding (giving fish) to the fledglings. The male was on a branch, female at the nest -- they were "talking." Fledglings (2) seen at the nest. Male flew away; female flew to the branch.

06/26/2015 by Rivergirl
Female was seen in the nest, feeding nestlings.

06/20/2015 by Rivergirl
Both adults were at the nest; male was on the left. The female was flapping her wings over the two nestlings.

06/18/2015 by Rivergirl
Female on edge of the nest, occasionally lifting-opening wings. Both adults were quiet. Male on a branch to left of the nest. There are two hatchlings!

06/14/2015 by Rivergirl
Female was at the nest, standing and raising and gently waving her wings - assume it was for care of hatchlings in today's high temp., though there was a light, cool breeze. Male not seen.

06/11/2015 by Rivergirl
An adult was in the nest, laying/standing quietly. Think I saw a hatchling!

06/06/2015 by Rivergirl
Today was windy, cloudy. The female was at the nest, very muddy wings - she looked into the nest, preened, and then laid down in the nest. No other adult seen and no hatchlings seen.

05/29/2015 by Rivergirl
Close to mid-day and very warm. An adult was seen on a branch to the right of the nest; no activity observed in the nest, but this is a very deep nest.

05/25/2015 by Rivergirl
Male flew into the nest, stayed about 1 min. and left - didn't see a fish. Later, the male was seen in the nest, female on branch to left of the nest. Male was "fixing" the nest.

05/22/2015 by Rivergirl
Female was in the nest; think I saw a hatchling! Usually don't see the female standing, so this, too, suggests hatchlings have arrived.

05/17/2015 by Rivergirl
Both adults were observed to be at the nest. Female left and returned; didn't see a fish in her claws. Male was on the branch to the right of the nest for the observation time.

05/12/2015 by Rivergirl
Female was in the nest, sitting low. The male showed up, stayed in the nest for a couple minutes, and then flew off to the James Rive.

05/10/2015 by Rivergirl
Same behavior for both adult ospreys, as 5/7.

05/07/2015 by Rivergirl
Saw the female, from the Argyalltown Lane site, incubating, I believe. On the Lake view, the male was a branch below the nest, wet and preening.

05/03/2015 by Rivergirl
Neither the male nor the female osprey was observed in or near the nest today. I walked onto Argyalltown Lane and onto the property where the nest can be seen, but didn't see any activity or either of the ospreys. Didn't see or hear the ospreys during the 20 min. I was watching the nest and the area of the neighborhood.

04/26/2015 by Rivergirl
Female incubating eggs; male on branch of tree, at the left of nest.

04/24/2015 by Rivergirl
Had to go onto Argall Town Lane to see the female in the nest; she's incubating eggs. Male not seen.

04/19/2015 by Rivergirl
The female is incubating and the male is "hanging out" on branches near the nest.

04/14/2015 by Rivergirl
One was in the nest; could barely see its head - incubation has begun, maybe.

04/12/2015 by Rivergirl
Female observed in the nest - laying an egg? incubating an egg? Male showed up with some soft nesting materials and worked in the nest.

04/10/2015 by Rivergirl
Copulation observed.

04/07/2015 by Rivergirl
Looking at the nest this morning, it has been damaged by the winds we have had the past several days. One osprey was at the nest, and the other was bringing nest material -- which fell through the nest when it was dropped in the nest.

04/05/2015 by Rivergirl
On my way up The Maine, one osprey was on the branch to the left of the nest. On my way down The Maine, one osprey was in the nest (female?) and one was sitting on the branch to the left -- no activity observed.

04/02/2015 by Rivergirl
One was in the nest (female, I think) and the other was on a branch near the nest. Two other ospreys came to the nest, but quickly ended up flying away and didn't come back.

03/28/2015 by Rivergirl
Both ospreys were at the nest. Copulation, and continuing efforts with nest-building were observed. Progress is being made with the nest!

03/22/2015 by Rivergirl
On 3/17/15, I did see a pair of ospreys at the nest; both left and did not return within 10 mins. Last year's nest is gone. 3/22 Today, there was a pair of ospreys at the nest. They were observed in copulation and then nest-building efforts. When twigs were dropped in the old nest site, most of them fell to the ground through the nest site. Hoping for their success!

03/12/2015 by Rivergirl
On 3/10/15, there was a female osprey on a branch at the nest tree (no nest seen). Today, there was no osprey observed on my way up, or down, The Maine.

11/04/2014 by Rivergirl
I could not determine, throughout the spring and summer, if there were any young ospreys that hatched and fledged at this nest. There did not appear to be young ospreys in the nest, at any time during the late spring-summer months.

09/05/2014 by Rivergirl
4:30 this afternoon, no ospreys observed, or heard, as I walked up past the nest.

09/01/2014 by Rivergirl
No ospreys at the nest - perhaps they have left the area. Usually their departure time is mid-August, I think.

08/26/2014 by Rivergirl
There were two ospreys at the nest, one on a branch to the left of the nest, and the second one on a branch above the nest. There was "talking" between the two of them. I watched for about 15 min.; no change in behavior.

08/25/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning there was one osprey on a branch, to the left of the nest. It sat and was quiet, just looking around, for 15 mins.

08/21/2014 by Rivergirl
Neither osprey was at the nest and no activity was observed.

08/19/2014 by Rivergirl
At about 7:30 this morning, same behavior as 8/17.

08/17/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 9:00, one osprey was sitting on a branch above, and to the right, of the nest. It was "talking" while I watched, and after about 10 min., it flew off toward the James River. No young ospreys have been seen.

08/14/2014 by Rivergirl
9:20 this morning, neither adult was seen at, or near, the nest. Same was true two days ago. No activity observed at the nest.

08/09/2014 by Rivergirl
9:30 this morning, there was one osprey at the nest, on a branch just below the nest. No activity seen at the nest.

08/05/2014 by Rivergirl

08/03/2014 by Rivergirl
9:00 this morning, no ospreys at the nest. By 9:30, one was sitting on the edge of the nest. No nest activity observed.

07/31/2014 by Rivergirl

07/28/2014 by Rivergirl
One of the ospreys was sitting on a branch, near the nest, about 7:45 this morning. I watched about 10 minutes -- the osprey didn't move and there was no activity observed in the nest.

07/22/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 7:30, one osprey was sitting on the edge of the nest, watching down inside. No action seen in the nest.

07/18/2014 by Rivergirl
One of the ospreys was on a branch near the nest. No nest activity was observed. 20 min. later, the adult had not moved.

07/14/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 9:20, the nest was observed - no nest action. Neither of the adults was at the nest.

07/11/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 7:00, there was one osprey sitting on a branch above the nest, on the right. No activity was observed within the nest.

07/07/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 7:00, both ospreys were at the nest; one in the nest, and the other 1 branch or so down below. A third osprey approached the nest, flew "into" the osprey in the nest and created havoc! The situation continued during my observation time, about 30 mins. ( as I was on the road between this nest and the Riverkids).

07/03/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 8:30, there were no ospreys seen near, or at, the nest. No nest activity was observed.

06/30/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 7:30, neither of the ospreys was at the nest and no activity was observed. Same, about 8:15, as I was on my way home.

06/27/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, I think it was the female standing at the edge, then inside the nest. She flapped her wings very gently, and repeated this behavior about 30-45 sec. later. The male was also at the nest, slightly below and to the left. He flew off after about 1.5 min. I'm wondering if the eggs have hatched?

06/23/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 7:30, both adults were on branches where they could see into the nest. Both were watching the nest and sitting quietly.

06/20/2014 by Rivergirl
Today, at 6:45 A.M., both adults were at the nest, on branches slightly above the nest. They were sitting, quietly.

06/18/2014 by Rivergirl
At 6:45 this A.M., neither of the ospreys was at the nest, or nearby. No activity was observed in the nest.

06/15/2014 by Rivergirl
Neither osprey was seen at the nest, on my two observations, this morning (10:10 and 10:45).

06/12/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, both adults were at the nest. The female was standing in the nest, walking around it, and the male was on a branch beside the nest.

06/08/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 9:30, there was one osprey sitting on a branch just above the nest. The other one was on a branch beside the nest, and left after about a minute. When I was walking home, 45 mins. later, neither osprey was at the nest.

06/04/2014 by Rivergirl
Neither osprey was seen on the two observations (8:45, 9:15). No nest activity was observed.

06/02/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, one of the ospreys was observed landing on a branch very near the nest, with a fish in its talons. 20 mins. later, the osprey was eating the fish at the same site. No nest activity was observed.

05/30/2014 by Rivergirl
It appears that this is a new pair of ospreys. They have been adding material to the nest. Both were at the nest today, on branches very near the nest.

Today, about 8:30 A.M., there were two ospreys at the nest, and they appeared to be courting, and I believe I was observing copulation activities. Maybe the first eggs didn't hatch, or the hatchlings didn't make it. . . .

This morning there was an osprey on a branch next to the nest. There was bright sunlight. It was about 9:30.

Hard to know what's happening - yesterday A.M., and this afternoon, one of the ospreys was sitting very near the nest, but I didn't see any activity within the nest, nor any time in the nest by the parent. Will check again in three days.

5/11/2014 Mom has been at the nest, but not sitting in the nest, 5/9 and 5/11. It was about 8:30 or so both mornings.

There was no activity at the nest; neither of the ospreys was present (9:30 A.M.).

The female was on a branch, at the side of the nest. Couldn't see any activity in the nest, but it appears to be quite deep.

Mama was standing at the nest, and so was Papa. Couldn't see, but imagine there are nestlings - should see their heads soon!

I think the eggs have hatched - mom is no longer laying in the nest. She's standing and looking into the nest; similar to what I've seen at the James River nest. I thought I saw a chick's head sticking up a bit . . .

I may have this nest data wrong (no surprise, since this is my first osprey watch). Today, it looked like there may be nestlings - mama was sitting, then stood up and appeared to be giving close attention to the egg(s). There may be a hatchling coming aboard! I'll check again, day after tomorrow for details. I had my binoculars, and was watching closely!

This morning, about 9:30, I assume it was the female at the nest. She sat just above the nest, and walked around in it, then seemed to "lie down" for a couple minutes. Is that egg laying, maybe?! I have binoculars, but not the heavy duty type, so I didn't see much detail inside the nest.

The Lakers' nest is now quite well-built. One of them was at the nest today. 5:00 P.M.

Today, it became apparent that the tree is dead - not live. Neither osprey was at the site, and no evidence of a nest. There was a crow sitting in a tree next to the Laker site.

Two adults present at nest. New sticks in tree.
