Description
This nest is in a cypress tree in the James River, in the First Colony neighborhood. The site is at 174 The Maine. Members of the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists have monitored this nest since about 2010. The tree has been devastated by wind in recent years, and the branches are noticeably more bare than in the past. In 2020, the homeowners at 174 The Maine allowed volunteers to monitor the Osprey nest from their yard, where the nest is most visible. The depth of the nest can't be seen, but osprey activity is fairly visible from the high riverbank, which is roughly even with the brim of the nest.

Nesting Diaries

Mostly sunny and 81 degrees; light breeze. Saw both adult ospreys, one flying, one perched in the tree near the nest. Both flew away as we approached. One adult flew back by with a small fish clutched in its talons. No nestlings visible; waited about 15 minutes, but adults didn't return while we were there.

Cloudy and 60 degrees; no wind; 15 minutes -- Visited today for the first time this season; Christina Clarke, who has monitored this nest in the past, graciously accompanied me on my first Osprey Watch outing and introduced me to one of the property owners, who gave her permission to watch from the yard. As we walked out to the riverbank, we saw an adult osprey leave the nest and fly low along the water; he didn't return while we were there. Another adult (the female, we think) was in the nest the entire time we watched. There may have been a hatchling as well, but we couldn't see clearly enough to be certain. We heard fish crows nearby and saw a bald eagle. -- J. DeVasher

Today, at 2:00, it was sunny/cloudy -80 degrees, breezy. The female was standing on the left bare branch above the nest - she was in constant communication with the male, who was standing on a left lower full branch of the Cedar tree. The female was "talking" non-stop -- a Crow flew to the right lower branch of the tree, then flew off. . . The male Osprey flew off, across the James River. The female did stop "talking" and flew to the left landside of the James River. A crow flew to the Cedar Tree - then flew off toward landside; the Ospreys were gone from the Cedar Tree. Two kayaks in the James River were near the Cedar Tree, looking at the nest. The female Osprey flew to the nest, but then flew away. It appeared there was a hatchling in the nest! - neither adult was observed at the nest. A Crow flew to a branch at the top of the tree, stayed less than a minute, then flew off to the landside area. I stayed a couple more minutes, but didn't see any Ospreys. An interesting 2 hrs. of observation time. . .

05/23/2021 by Rivergirl
Sun. May 23 - 80 degrees, breezy, mixed clouds/sunny, 11:00. The male Osprey was on the top left bare branch, pruning. The female wasn't seen/heard, nor any other birds, at or near the James River. Two Ospreys flew near the nest; some "talking" occurred. The female Osprey flew to the left bare branch - both sat and looked at each other. No nesting activity was observed; both Ospreys just sat on the bare branch of the Cedar Tree. No other birds were seen in the air/water. Wind continued to increase. I left after one hour; there had been no Osprey activity - no nesting activity.

05/16/2021 by Rivergirl
Sun., May 16 - 70 degrees, cloudy, light breeze - 10:30. The male Osprey was sitting on the top left bare branch of the Cedar Tree; the female was sitting on a top left tree branch, pruning. Two Canada Geese swam by in the James River- no other birds seen/heard. A Crow flew to a right lower branch of the tree; no communication from the Osprey. The Crow flew to a lower left branch of the tree - it then flew off and was joined by two other Crows. All three flew to the upper landside of the river. Neither adult Osprey went to the nest. The male flew off, down the landside of the James River. The female stayed above the nest; she flew down to the nest (it's so deep, she couldn't be seen. .) . After 20 more mins., I left (1.25 hr.).

Tues., May 11th - 80 degrees, sunny, light breeze - 1:45p.m.. The female Osprey was on the left bare branch at the top of the Cedar Tree - eating something she had caught. She didn't go to the nest - stayed on the left branch. Lots of bugs in the yard today. . The male wasn't seen; no other birds seen at the James River or landside. The female Osprey faced the river; did some pruning; no nest activity seen today. Very quiet at the James River. Light clouds were coming from across the James River, and to the left. Two Blackbirds flew to Cedar tree branches, were very quiet, then flew landside. Three Crows flew to the nest; the female Osprey wasn't seen - 2 of the Crows flew away, then returned, sat on the top left dead branch of the Cedar tree and talked to each other --then flew off. The female Osprey flew to the top dead tree branch, then to a lower branch where there were leaves. The temperature was getting hotter;- the female did some "talking", then became quiet. A Crow flew to a right lower tree branch and sat. . . With the heat, I moved the chair I'd been sitting in, and left the property, after 2.5 hrs.

At 10:15, it was 60 degrees, sunny, with light breeze. The female Osprey was sitting quietly on a top branch of the Cedar tree. No other birds were seen/heard at the James River. The female flew off across the River, then returned to the same branch, not with a fish. She did some "talking"; male was seen flying on the land side. Female did some pruning, male flew by, up the James River, then to the nest - flew away immediately, stayed on the river, then flew landside. Another busy hour and a half for the Ospreys.

05/05/2021 by Rivergirl
At 11:45, it was sunny, heavy breeze, 80 degrees. The male Osprey was on the top dead branch of the tree; he flew off, landside, soon after I sat down to watch. No other birds were seen/heard, landside or on the James River. The nest completely faces the river - hard to see what is happening. . . The male flew to the top left branch of the Cedar tree; he had a fish and was eating it. Clouds were moving in and the wind speed was rising. The male did a little "talking" and then was quiet -- then "talked" again. The female Osprey was not seen. Two Ospreys were seen flying over the James River, and going landside. The male flew landside, then flew to the nest, stood on a branch facing the James River. The female flew to the nest, too -- both then went fishing up the River. A crow flew to a low branch of the tree; then flew off. This was a busy hour and a half for both Ospreys!

Today, at 10:30, it was breezy, sunny, 70 degrees. No other birds were seen/heard at the James River/landside. The female Osprey was on the top bare branch at the Cedar Tree -- she did some pruning and a bit of "talking." A male flew to the nest; the female flew off, up the James River. The male flew to a lower left branch of the tree. The female flew by the nest, but didn't stop. The male flew off, going after the female -- both flew up the James River, to the landside. No activity seen at the nest; no Ospreys now seen/heard. The male did fly back to the lower left branch, and sat quietly. He did not fly to the nest- female not at the nest. Interesting 1.5 hr. of observation. .. .

04/23/2021 by Rivergirl
Today, it was sunny, about 70 degrees, at 2:45; I observed for an hour. When I arrived, there were no Ospreys seen/heard, or other birds. In a few minutes, the female Osprey came to the top left branch of the Cedar tree - she did some pruning, but no fish was seen. There were four Ospreys flying on the James River, 1 flew to the nest where the female was, 2 others flew along the James River. The female at the nest flew to the top bare branch from the nest. She "talked", then was quiet, then "talked" some more. She chased away another female that flew to the nest - then flew away herself. A male Osprey flew over the nest, and across the James River. The female returned, and sat on the top dead tree branch, again. I had a 4:00 appointment, and had to leave after an hour of observation time. There has never been this much activity, with multiple Ospreys, at this nest site. . .it's been very interesting!

04/20/2021 by Rivergirl
Today, it was sunny, 60 degrees, mild breeze, at 9:45. The female was on the top dead tree branch - the male was not seen/heard today. The female did a little "talking", then flew up the James River - arrived at a mid-tree branch with a fish, and stood and ate it. She flew up the James, land side - there was noise and activity on a neighbor's property today. A Crow came to a top tree branch, then flew off - two Ospreys flew by, landside. The female flew to a top dead branch on the Cedar tree, did some "talking" - another Osprey was seen landside, and the female flew off, up the James, on the right side. I didn't see her again -- left after an hour and a half of observation time.

04/17/2021 by Rivergirl
Today, was sunny, light breeze, 55 degrees at 10:00. The female was sitting on a top bare branch of the Cedar Tree. Male was not seen/heard. James River is quiet this morning. Female did a bit of "talking", but didn't move - Male not seen/heard. Female flew down into the nest, which is very deep. She flew up to a bare branch on the left, above the nest, then flew across the James River, and returned with a fish! The male arrived at the nest, flew off, and returned to stand at the nest. Female was eating the fish she had caught. Another Osprey flew by the nest; continued up the James. Another female Osprey flew to the nest, was chased by the first female - there were three Ospreys at the tree -- 2 were at the nest, and the first female seen remained at the right lower branch of the tree, eating the fish she had caught. Very interesting behavior at the nest! After an hour and 15 mins., I left for home.

04/11/2021 by Rivergirl
Today was sunny, warm, and light breeze. Ospreys were seen and heard in the sky - but there was no activity at the nest 11:15-12:15. The home owners and I will be in touch; the - Ospreys may be looking for a new nest site.

04/09/2021 by Rivergirl
Today, no Ospreys were seen/heard. At 2:30, the sun was very hot, it was breezy, cloudy, and 80 degrees. No bird activity was observed in the James River, or landside. The clouds increased, thunder was heard, and light sprinkles of rain began - I headed home. No Ospreys seen in an hour and a half.

04/04/2021 by Rivergirl
At 2:15, it was 80 degrees, sunny, breezy. The nest completely faces the James River, so I couldn't see if the female was in the nest. She did arrive at a bare branch, on the upper end of the Cypress tree. The male flew by -- they both flew to landside; "talking" was heard. The female came, a bit later, to the tree area below the nest, with a fish! She sat and ate it. The male was seen with a twig for the nest. The home-owners were on their porch, and we had some good conversation about the pair of Ospreys!

04/01/2021 by Rivergirl
At 3:45 p.m., there was mixed sun/clouds, and some breeze. The female Osprey was sitting on the top bare branch of the Cedar tree - male was not seen/heard. The clouds were getting heavy, the temperature was dropping, and wind speed was picking up. The female did a little "talking", then flew off into the neighborhood. A crow flew to the nest; then flew up the James on the land-side. The temperature was dropping, wind was picking up -- the female did not return (male not seen today). I left after 45 mins. -

03/29/2021 by Rivergirl
At noontime, it was breezy, sunny, and about 55 degrees. The female was sitting a branch above the nest -- she flew off --the male was also seen, doing some talking. They both flew down the James River on the landside, and there was also a third Osprey flying down the James River. Two Ospreys flew by the nest -the Female landed at the nest and was "talking" -- 3 Ospreys were flying near the nest; none of them stopped at the nest. The female Osprey stood on the top branch above the nest; then she flew off, above the nest, and flew down the James River, on the left side. The wind speed was picking up -- no Ospreys were seen/heard for 20-30 mins, so I headed home.

03/28/2021 by Rivergirl
Today it was warm/cloudy. Wind speed at the James River was very high. Initially, there were no Ospreys seen/heard. Shortly, a female flew to the nest-did some talking, and a male was also seen at the nest. There was a second pair of birds ( Ospreys or Eagles) that seemed to be wanting the nest, too. The wind got so heavy, I was getting almost blown over. . . so I headed home! I'll go again tomorrow or Monday and see what's happening!

03/26/2021 by Rivergirl
When I arrived, about 11:00, there was heavy wind at the James River, and some sun. No Ospreys were seen/heard. The wind and clouds increased and I left after about 30 mins.

Nesting Diary information by C.Clark (CFlanagan moved information from incorrect location) March 26, 2021 It appears that there are two pairs of Ospreys fighting for the use of this nest. Yesterday was the first time I visited the nest area; there were two crows present, and a female Osprey sitting on a "pole" eating its catch. The crows flew off, a male Osprey made them do that... 3/26/21 Today, it was cloudy, 70 degrees, and there was some heavy wind & some sun. No Ospreys were seen/heard. Winds&clouds increased; I left after about 30 mins.

03/25/2021 by Rivergirl
Today, there was light breeze & clouds. The female Osprey was at the edge of the nest. The male approached the nest - she flew off, so did the male. The female flew to the boat "deck" next door, and sat and ate what she had had in her claws. A couple crows were challenging her - they flew away. A male Osprey flew by the nest; the female did some "talking" - the male flew off across the James River. There appeared to be two pairs of Ospreys fighting for the same large nest built years ago. . . Wind speed increased, clouds increased -- rain was on its way!

08/21/2020 by Rivergirl
I believe the Ospreys have begun their migration. No birds were seen at/near the James River -nor were the Ospreys seen. Dark clouds were coming in from the James River. Ticks were coming after me - I left for home!

08/18/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, there were no Ospreys seen at the tree, or in the James River. Four Canada Geese were seen flying over the James - no other birds seen/heard, and no Eagles seen. The Ospreys may have begun migration. I'll check again in a couple days. . ..

08/16/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, at 8:15 a. m., it was cloudy, with light breeze. The female was sitting at the top of the Cedar Tree, on a bare branch. The male was not seen today. The female flew across the James River, to the right landside. Crows were seen, and heard, on the left landside. An Eagle flew to the Cedar Tree, and was joined at the Osprey nest by another Eagle; a third Eagle was seen, flying over the James River. The two Eagles went after the Osprey fledgling, as it was heading toward the nest - then no birds were observed at, or near, the Osprey nest. One of the residents at 174 The Maine came out of the house, and told me the Eagles have been fighting for fish with the Ospreys. Two Crows came to the top bare branch of the Cedar Tree and stayed there. The Eagles and Ospreys were gone - the Crows flew off, too. No birds were observed for the next 30 min., so I headed home.

08/10/2020 by Rivergirl
No ospreys seen at the nest, Cedar tree, or along the James River. A group of 4-6 crows was seen/heard coming and going along the river, and landside. One of the crows perched in the Cedar tree, for a few minutes, then flew down the landside. No ospreys were seen/heard today. I'll come back early A.M. or late P.M. for my next visit - wonder if they may have migrated already -- we'll see. . . .

08/07/2020 by Rivergirl
I had hoped to see the Ospreys today, but it was very windy (gusting close to 30 mph), 90 degrees. No Ospreys were seen/heard - I left after one hour.

08/07/2020 by Rivergirl
Aug. 7th, 10:30 - 11:30, cloudy, light breeze, 75 degrees. The female, who had not been seen the last three visits, was sitting on the top left branch of the Cedar Tree! -- the fledgling and male Osprey were not seen today. The female flew up the James River, then to the land side on the right. The Osprey nest appears to have survived the recent heavy winds. About 12 Turkey Vultures were seen flying above the land side, on the right. There were no other Ospreys seen during my hour of observation time today.

08/03/2020 by Rivergirl
At 11:30 today, it was 90 degrees, high wind speed, sunny, and 90 degrees. No other birds were seen today, except 5-6 crows, landside. The Ospreys were not seen when I arrived; but the fledgling arrived at the nest -didn't have a fish. It sat on the top tree branch on the left, and was very quiet. Some "talking" was initiated by an Osprey on the landside - the fledgling did some "talking" too. A crow flew to a branch under the nest, on the right, then flew off. . . The wind speed was steadily increasing; there were a few light clouds. The fledgling flew off to the landside; the wind speed was significantly increasing and so was the heat. The female Osprey hasn't been seen since 7/25. With the heavy wind speed, today, I left after one hour.

07/30/2020 by Rivergirl
As I arrived today, the male Osprey and the fledgling both arrived at the nest (about 11:30). The female was not at the nest or the tree. It was a sunny and very hot day! The fledgling flew off, down the James River - the male was talking to the fledgling quite a bit. The fledgling returned, but not with a fish. It then flew off to the James River and the male flew across the James. There were no other birds seen at, or near the James River; no fish were observed in the James River. The fledgling flew to the top left branch of the Cedar tree and stayed, looking into the river, for about 10 mins., it then flew off and went to the landside of the river. The female was not seen today, and the male and the fledgling were not seen for the last 10 min. of my observation time (1.5 hr). Neither of them had found a fish. . .

07/26/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, at 9:45, it was 80 degrees, light sun and breeze. No birds were seen/heard in the James River. After a few minutes, the female Osprey arrived on a bare branch at the top of the Cedar tree, the male flew to another bare branch at the tree top. The fledgling was flying nearby - the female "talked" to it, then it flew up the James river. No fish seen in the river today. . . The adults did a bit of "talking" as the fledgling flew to the Cedar tree (no fish), then it flew back to land-side. The adults stayed in the tree.

07/21/2020 by Rivergirl
On July 21st, 9:30 - 10:15, it was 82 degrees, sunny, light breeze. One of the Ospreys flew by with a fish, followed by another adult; both flew toward the land side of the James River. No Ospreys seen at the nest, or in the Cedar tree. No other birds were seen at, or near, the James River. About 10 mins. later, I saw an Osprey fly from landside, to the river, then back to the landside. 2-3 mins. later, I saw an Osprey fly from the river, to landside on the left of where I was standing (no fish). No other birds seen, up or down the river and no Ospreys were seen at, or near, the Cedar tree nest. After 45 mins., the temp. was 88 degrees in the shade. . . .

07/16/2020 by Rivergirl
At 9:30, it was 80 degrees, sunny, light breeze. The female was sitting on a left bare branch at the nest, preening. The fledgling flew by the tree-the female followed the fledgling down the James River. There was a dead fish in the James, near the Cedar Tree - and an Eagle flew up the landside of the James River. The female flew to the nest, and sat on a bare branch at the top of the Cedar Tree. The fledgling flew to the tree, perched a minute, then flew down the James River; the female followed the fledgling, gathered a twig and took it to the nest, and then followed the fledgling down the James (nest was empty). I waited about 10 mins. - no activity at the nest and no Ospreys seen, so I headed home. Male not seen today.

07/11/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, at 9:45, it was 80 degrees, cloudy and wind was blowing. The female was on a top bare branch - the male and chick (may be a fledgling) were not seen. The waves in the James River were increasing, the wind was increasing, too. The male Osprey returned, and sat next to the female - no fish seen. The fledgling arrived! All three flew in and out of the nest, Then the adults flew off; the fledgling remained at the nest. The female returned, and she and the fledgling sat at the edge of the nest. The fledgling went down into the nest, the male arrived and both adults stayed at the edge of the nest. The wind was increasing, the sun was shining a lot, just a few clouds - adults were "talking" at the nest. It was getting to be quite hot. I had been watching for an hour and 45 min. - so I started home. . .

07/05/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, at 10:15, it was 80 degrees and cloudy. The male sat on a bare branch at the top of the Cedar tree; the female was on a branch, on the right, halfway down the tree. They did some "talking" to each other - no other birds were seen land-side or in the James River. The female flew off, over the James River; the male stayed on the bare branch. The female flew back to the nest, but didn't have a fish. The chick was down in the nest, but its head could be seen. The female flew off, down the James River, then up past the nest. Both adults remained gone from the nest - after 30 mins., neither one had returned to the nest and light rain began. I headed home!

07/04/2020 by Rivergirl
At 10:30, it was 85 degrees, sunny, light breeze. The female was sitting at the top of the Cedar tree, on a dead branch; she flew off to the James River - male not seen. There were 5-6 small birds flying - near the nest - for about 30 min. Chick/fledgling(?) not seen. Male flew to a branch above the nest - no fish. The female arrived, with a small fish. She flew to a bare branch at the top of the tree and ate the fish. No view of the chick. . . The female then flew to the James River and "cleaned" her feet in the water (?), then back to a bare branch at the top of the tree, near the male. Both adults sat there; chick was not seen/heard today. The male flew up the James River, could not see him (watched about 20 min.). Female stayed on the top branch of the tree. Interesting view today. . .

06/29/2020 by Rivergirl
At 9:45, it was 80 degrees, sunny, and a light breeze. The female was sitting on the edge of the nest, looking landside. Two birds were seen, landside and flying - 1 was an eagle; 2nd eagle seen - female was saying "stay away" to them. The male arrive to a lower bare branch of the Cedar tree, with a fish! He sat and ate some of the fish, then took some of it to the nest. The female flew off, chasing an eagle; she flew back to the nest, and could be seen with the chick -- it went and stood on the right edge of the nest, next to the female. It seems to be about ready to fledge!

06/24/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, at 11:00, it was 85 degrees. The female and chick were at the top edge of the nest - the male wasn't seen. Quickly, the male arrived with a fish. He shared with both the female and the chick, and then flew to the top bare branch of the Cedar tree. The chick came to the edge of the nest and did some wing movements. The female and the chick were on opposite sides of the nest; the male was at the top tree branch. The chick laid down in the nest; the female sat quietly on the right edge of the nest. All three Ospreys were at the Cedar Tree nest; no major communication or activity were observed for the next 15 mins.

Today, at 5:00 it was 96 degrees! The female and the chick (there is only one now) were at the nest. Two vultures flew toward the nest - the female chased them away! She flew back to the nest; she and the chick stood at the edge of the nest. Male was not seen today - it was so hot I had to cut my "visit" time short.

06/18/2020 by Rivergirl
As I arrived to monitor the nest, at about 1:45 p.m., it was cloudy, with light breeze. The male was sitting on the top bare branch of the tree, and the female flew into the nest from the James River. Male was "talking" consistently. The chick (think there is only one) got some fish from the female. The male flew off the nest, up the James; the chick stood and looked out of the nest. No other birds were seen landside or in the river. The female flew off, to chase a crow that flew by. The male flew back to a lower branch on the tree, with a fish, and started eating it. The adults did some "talking"; the male flew up to the nest with about half the fish. He then stood at the edge of the nest, as the female fed the chick, and ate some fish herself. The male flew off, and came back to the bare branch at the top of the tree. There seems to be just one chick, which is growing quite well!

06/13/2020 by Rivergirl
At 11:00, it was 80 degrees and sunny (light clouds); both adults were standing at the edge of the nest, looking land-side. One chick was seen in the nest (it's growing!). A second chick was also observed. The male flew off, down the James River, caught a fish, flew back to the nest. Shared the fish with the female and the chick(s); some nest adjustment was also done. Activity in the nest, with the chicks and adults!

06/06/2020 by Rivergirl
I arrived at 9:15. A chick was seen at the nest, while the male was there (breeze & clouds increasing). The male left the nest, flew a bit and returned. The female came to the nest, with a fish, while the male was working on nest modification; she did some of that, too, and a bit of "talking." Male flew landside and returned with a twig; the female chased two crows from the nest and stayed landside. Male did some "talking" - female did, too. She flew off, got a small fish, went to a left tree branch, and ate. It was getting very windy - I went home!

06/01/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, at 10:30, it was sunny, and 70 degrees. The male flew to a branch at the top of the Cedar tree. An eagle was seen flying over the James River, near landside, at 174 The Maine, where the nest is located. In about 15 mins., a chick was seen in the nest; the male "talked" to it! A second chick was then seen in the nest! The feathers/back of the female were seen; she's been tending to the chicks. Glad to see her! There were no clouds; the temperature was getting hot.

05/28/2020 by Rivergirl
Today there were light "sprinkles", and light wind; the observation was done 3:30 -4:30. The female was in the nest, doing some "talking". The male flew to the nest with a fish, and both adults stood on the edge of the nest. He flew to a top dead branch of the tree; female fed the chicks. The male flew off, down the James River - then flew back to the same branch at the top of the tree. A chick was seen in the nest! The clouds were getting darker; so I decided to walk back home, after an hour.

05/26/2020 by bruceg
From Jamestown Beach using a scope - thought I saw two nestlings, not the activity rept of one, but I was far away. One adult on nest. No second adult in sight.

05/25/2020 by Rivergirl
It was cloudy, light breeze, about 72 degrees, at 3:00. The male was sitting on a dead branch at the top of the Cedar tree, near the nest; he did a little "talking" to Mama and the chicks down in the nest. He flew to the nest, where the female was then standing in the nest. The male flew out, got a new "twig" for the nest, and flew it to the nest. At least one chick (maybe two) was seen, with its head looking out of the nest! The female was busy down in the nest; the male flew off the nest and down the James River. The female stood on the edge of the nest - and pooped out into the James! She then stood on the edge of the nest, looked and walked down into the nest. The male flew in with a fish - both adults were eating fish. A piece of blue plastic, that has been seen for several weeks in the branches under the nest, is now in the nest! The male flew to a left branch, with a bit of fish, and sat and ate it.

05/20/2020 by Rivergirl
It was cloudy and quite windy today; about 58 degrees, at 10:30. The male was standing on a right bare branch - doing a bit of "talking." He flew to the nest, the female stood up in the nest, and she moved to a left lower branch. The male remained in the nest; then flew off down the James River. The female went back to the nest. The wind was picking up; the nest is so deep, no movement, nor an adult could be seen. The male did some fishing on the James River -- wind got heavier, temp. dropped; he was gone at least 30 mins. and not seen or heard. Rain started -- dripping lightly. I quickly walked home!

05/16/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, about 9:00 a.m., the female was standing on the left side of the nest, doing some "talking." The male climbed out of the nest, sat on the edge, and did some nesting arrangement with new "twigs." Both adults were down in the nest. The male left, went fishing in the James River, came back with a small fish, and sat on a lower right branch and ate the fish. He went back into the James River several times, but didn't get another fish. The female stood in the nest, then laid down. The male flew back to the nest, without a fish, sat on a tree branch and did pruning. Then, he flew to a left bare branch of the tree, and sat -- did more pruning. Female remained in the nest.

05/11/2020 by Rivergirl
It was cloudy and cool today; with quite a bit of wind, about 5:00 p.m. Neither the male or female were initially observed - then the female was seen, and a chick, too, I think! No other birds see/heard on the James River, or landside. Several crows were flying, near the Cedar Tree- the female did some "talking" to keep them away. The male arrived with a small fish, went to a mid-tree branch, stood and ate some of the fish. He then flew up to the nest, gave it to the female -- she went to a lower branch and ate what he had given her. The male stayed in the nest; female took the fish to the nest, stayed about a min., then flew to a left branch below the nest. She moved to another lower tree branch, and finished the fish. Her behavior today suggested there was at least one chick in the nest! My observation time was 1.45 min. today.

05/06/2020 by Rivergirl
Male was on a top right tree branch; female was down deep in the nest (about 10:30, cloudy, little breeze, about 58 degrees. 4 small Blackbirds came to the Cedar tree, 3 flew off, 1 stayed on a left lower branch. Male Osprey hadn't moved - did a bit of pruning, then flew off toward landside. He flew to the nest with a fish, for the female, then sat on a bare left branch of the tree. One Blackbird flew to a lower left branch, and stayed in the tree.

05/03/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, observation was done 11:00 -12:30, full sun, light breeze, about 80 degrees. The male was on a right branch, just below the nest; some "communication" was heard, then the male flew off, down the James River. He flew back with a large twig; the female was down deep in the nest. She stood up in the nest, then laid back down. The male flew The male was on a right branch, just below the nest; he then flew off, down the James River, got a large twig, and returned. The female was down deep in the nest. The male flew to a left bare branch. The female stood up in the nest, then laid back down. The male flew off, up the James River; the female was busy in the nest and did a bit of "talking", then was quiet. The male came back to a top dead branch. He got no fish in several tries, and finally got a small fish! He went to a mid-tree branch, and sat and ate the fish. The female remained in the nest.

04/30/2020 by Rivergirl
Observation today 4:45-6:00; cloudy light breeze. The female was in the nest, the male was on the left top branch of the Cedar Tree - no other birds seen in the James River. The female flew off, came back with nesting material; the male came to the nest, then flew off down the James. The female was observed standing in the nest, attending to chicks. The clouds/wind were increasing.

04/26/2020 by Rivergirl
I went twice today, 1:15-2:30 when it was cloudy, heavy breeze, and later, 5:00 - 6:15, when it was sunny, much lower wind. First visit the male was on a left branch and went fishing; he had no success with six tries! The female was down deep in the nest; wind speed picked up, so I went back home. Later in the afternoon, at 5:00, it was sunny, low wind, and 80 degrees. There were 2 crows sitting on lower branches of the Cedar Tree - they flew off. The female was down deep in the nest; male flew to a lower branch with a fish! He ate some of it; flew to the nest and gave some fish to the female. He flew to a lower tree branch, ate a bit, then flew off down the James River. The female was seen in the nest; she seemed to be "talking" to chicks! She stood on the left edge of the nest, then flew into the nest and could be seen feeding a chick! The male also flew to the nest. Time for me to walk home, after 1.25 hr. I'm glad to have seen the male be productive with fishing, and to see at least one chick!

04/22/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, it appeared the female is incubating the eggs. From 1:00 - 3:00, it was 60 degrees, quite breezy, sunny. The male arrived with a small fish, went to the nest, then down to a lower branch, and ate the fish. The female is deep in the nest - incubating, I think. The male flew to a top dead branch, and looked down into the nest. The female engaged in light activity in the nest (rotating eggs, maybe?). I stayed two hours; I'll go earlier in the day next time.

04/19/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, it was 70 degrees, cloudy, at 3:30. Both Ospreys were at the nest when I arrived; the male flew down to a left branch, with a small fish, and the female went down into the nest and could barely be seen. Another pair of Ospreys was seen/heard flying along the James River, on the land side. The Riverkids female could be seen a little, facing toward the neighborhood. It appeared that she was incubating the eggs. I'll come again in several days.

04/18/2020 by Rivergirl
Sat. afternoon it was breezy, about 65 degrees; started as cloudy, then got sunny. I saw the male fly to the nest, and thought there may have been a hatchling - the female was down in the nest. The male flew to a lower left tree branch; sat for about 20-30 mins., then flew over the James River. When he flew back, both adults were standing in the nest - female flew off, and the male, too. The wind and heat were picking up. The male flew to the left lower branch and pruned; then flew to the James River for fish. The female was deep in the nest - maybe incubating? The tips of her wings were seen. I waited almost an hour to see when the male might return with a fish, but it didn't happen-I did 2 hrs. of observation. I'll go again in two days and hopefully see some nest activity. . . .

04/16/2020 by Rivergirl
I went for observation at 4:30 this afternoon, and stayed 45 mins. It was 70 degrees, sunny, and breezy. The Cedar tree is getting green! 1 osprey was on the top right dead branch - the female, I think. There were a few other birds in the James River area- the osprey was "talking" to them. No nest activity observed. The male arrived at the nest with a fish; the fish was shared - the female flew to a lower branch, the male stayed and ate some fish in the nest. He did some nest work, with twigs, too, and then flew off to the James River. No activity, e.g., egg laying, was observed.

04/09/2020 by Rivergirl
There were light clouds and heavy breeze today; temp. was 80 degrees. The male was on a branch below the nest, eating a fish he had caught. The female was standing in the nest, which was stationary, despite the heavy wind that was blowing - the sun was shinning quite a bit. The male flew off, got a small fish, and flew into the nest. The wind was sooo heavy that both ospreys stood in the nest, and then laid down, in the nest. This was quite an amazing observation time!

04/04/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, about 2:00, it was cloudy, light breeze, and about 60 degrees. The female was sitting, very calmly, on a bare branch, on the left side of the Cedar tree. Today, the nest seems o.k.; wind was quite high yesterday. The male flew in with a small fish, sat on the branch where the female had been - she went and sat in the nest. The male went and got some re-building material; he did some re-building, while the female stood on a branch beside the nest. An Eagle flew by, at the edge of the James River, then went land-side. Both Ospreys flew off, each got a fish, and then returned to the tree. Copulation activity was observed-same as on 3/26; male then flew off, over the James River and the female sat on the highest tree branch.

03/31/2020 by Rivergirl
Both ospreys were at the nest - female had just flown in with a fish! Then, both were flying in/out of the nest, gathering nesting material for the remainder of my view time (an hour). I did get in touch with Bruce. I've shared information on Osprey Watch with the owners of the home closer to viewing the current nest updating.

03/26/2020 by Rivergirl
This year, the nest is facing the James River. Some re-building was observed to be in process. Both ospreys were observed at the nest area, and on the James River. Copulation was observed! I have been given the opportunity to observe the nest from neighbors who live close to the Cedar tree on the James River. They are interested in learning about ospreys; I'll share some of the history of this pair with them. I'll get in touch with Bruce Glendening; I, too, am a Master Naturalist.

3/23 - While observing My Nest nearby Nest #8 located off Jamestown Beach -- I saw one adult osprey in this nest #4786. A second adult then flew towards the nest with a fish, but was chased away by what looked like a juvenile eagle. Eagle chased osprey for about 2 minutes and then departed - nice acrobatics. After eagle left, adult was able to land on the nest #4786 -- still with the fish. I see rivergirl's following the nest and should be theprimary follower, if she wants. I don't know if she's submitted the primary Activity Report for this nest. If not and needs help. Call me, since there should be one primary report (that will eventually include the # of eggs and fledging) by whomever is the lead follower of the nest. I'm Bruce Glendening, Williamsburg Master Naturalist, 703-409-7059

Observation was in mid-afternoon, cloudy/breezy, and 60 degrees. The female was on a left branch of the tree, and so was the male. He flew off, got a fish, and returned to the nest. He then went to the same branch as the female, and they sat side-by-side. Two crows came, and flew into the nest! The ospreys chased them away, and went back to the nest tree. The female sat in the nest, and the male went to the highest branch at the center of the tree. The crows did not come back; the ospreys sat on branches, and looked down the James River.

03/18/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, observation was 10:30-11:00, and 11:30-Noon. Initially, the female was sitting, quietly, on an upper branch of the Cedar tree. The male flew into the tree and sat next to the female; in a few minutes, he flew off. As I walked back down The Maine, after a walk to the marina to see if the ospreys had returned there, and no they hadn't, both ospreys were working on improving their nest from last year! It faces the James River and is quite large.

03/15/2020 by Rivergirl
Today, it was cloudy, breezy, and about 60 degrees. The female was sitting on a top branch of the Cedar tree. After a few minutes, the male flew to the tree, with a fish. He went to the old nest in the tree for a few minutes, then took the fish to the female. She ate the fish, the male flew off, down the James River. On my return down The Maine, after walking up to the Marina to see if the pair who lived there for a number of years might be returning (not seen/heard), the female at 178 The Maine was sitting on the same branch, and the male was not observed.

03/14/2020 by Rivergirl
The female(?) continues to sit on a branch at the top of the tree. Male was not observed. No changes in the nest were observed. The home owner hasn't seen the other Osprey in the nest area either. Hope both Ospreys will make it to the nest!

03/12/2020 by Rivergirl
When I walked up to 176 The Maine, I saw an osprey sitting on a top limb of the cedar tree, that "sits" in the James River. There is no greenery on the tree branches; there was left-over nesting material seen in the tree. I believe it was the female Osprey sitting up in the tree. The homeowners are deep into creating outdoor driveway and "deck" design; the crew makes quite a bit of continuous noise, unfortunately. We will see how the spring-summer go for the Ospreys.

08/29/2019 by Rivergirl
When I went back to view the nest and the Ospreys the evening of 8/26, there were no Ospreys seen in the area. Today, I did see the smaller male Osprey, the mate from last year, I believe, and the beginning of this year at the Cedar Tree nest. When I had started viewing the new incubation period this summer, in early June, there was a new male (quite a bit larger than the previous male from earlier this season, and also from last year). The male/female activities this year have been consistent with Osprey behavior, and there have been three fledglings from their efforts this year. I talked with the work crew at the home, and pier, where I have observed this year, and they haven't seen the Ospreys for a couple days either. So, I believe the adults, and the three fledglings have now migrated!!

08/26/2019 by Rivergirl
Today, there were no Ospreys at the nest. No activity was observed in the James River. A crow was seen sitting in the Cedar Tree--it "talked" and then flew away to the land side. No Ospreys seen or heard today. They may have begun their migration. . . I'll go back again this evening and see if the Ospreys are still there.

08/25/2019 by Rivergirl
Observation was in early evening (5:30 -7:00). A fledgling came to the top bare branch of the Cedar tree - it "talked" a bit - another fledgling was seen, hunting in the James River, and it caught a fish and flew to the landside. Light work was being done at the pier today. A crow flew to a lower dead branch of the Cedar tree -- it left and flew back to the same branch. A fledgling "talked" to the crow, and the crow flew off. The other two fledglings were seen hunting in the James River, with no success.

08/21/2019 by Rivergirl
Observation was mid-day, it was sunny, windy, and humid - 85degrees. One adult was at the nest, and also a fledgling - both doing much "talking" and eating. The fledgling flew off, to the land side of the James River. The wind today is very high, there is lots of wind noise, and heavy clouds -- rain is on its way. . . 10 Turkey Vultures were seen!!, close to the land side of the James River, and to the James River, also. The wind speed was picking up, rain clouds were coming -- so I headed home (and got rained on a bit!).

08/18/2019 by Rivergirl
Lots of "talking" ; female and fledglings at the Cedar tree; a crow came and sat in top dead branch of the tree. Female left the Cedar tree, and both adults were seen land-side; they flew toward the water in First Colony. The 3 fledglings did much "talking!" The crow flew to a lower Cedar tree branch. The female osprey flew to the land side. Crow flew to top dead branch of the Cedar tree; finally flew away! One fledgling flew to a lower dead branch of the Cedar tree; second fledgling left the nest and flew to the land side. Third fledgling tried 3 times to get a fish, but had no success. . . and flew to the land side. One fledgling flew to the nest (it was wet, but no fish, and it sat on a top branch of the Cedar tree). No successful fishing by adults or fledglings was observed.

08/17/2019 by Rivergirl
Adults at the nest; a fledgling flew into the tree; 2 fledglings at the nest. 3rd fledgling seen on tree branch on the land side. All are quiet - parents sitting facing each other.

08/08/2019 by Rivergirl
The female was on a top dead branch of the Cedar tree, doing much "talking." She flew down to the nest, the male flew in with a fish, and there was much activity - the nest was full with the chicks (3) and adults! One fledgling flew to a land-side pine tree, did a bit of talking. The nest activity was amazing, with the chicks and adults (four ospreys) moving in the nest, and the one in the land-side tree.

08/01/2019 by Rivergirl
There are 3 fledglings! One was on a bare tree branch, the other two were in the nest. Female was doing much "talking"/the nestling on the branch was doing "work" with its wings. Then, all activity became "quiet." The male arrived with a small fish - he dropped it at the nest and flew to a landside tree. The nestlings ate the fish. A Crow flew to a lower branch of the Cedar tree, then flew up toward the nest - then flew away, to join six crows on the landside. The nest became quiet, with little movement observed in the nest.

07/28/2019 by Rivergirl
Today, there were two fledglings seen in the nest - the female was on the right edge of the nest and the male flew up to the top bare branch. The fledglings were flapping their wings, and there was lots of "talking" going on. The wind speed picked up a bit; the female and fledglings all went down into the nest. The male, too, flew down into the nest. One of the fledglings flew to a land-side Cedar tree! An eagle was observed flying to a near-by tree on the land-side also -- a lot of "yelling" between the eagle and ospreys was heard. Looking back and forth between the land side and the osprey nest, I missed when the land side fledgling left that tree. For about 20 mins., the eagle and osprey were "yelling" at each other, and the nest fledgling kept spreading its wings. Having been observing this nest for over two hrs., I was sorry to leave and head home. I'll go back in 2-3 days and what's happening next at this nest!

07/26/2019 by Rivergirl
It was about 10:45a.m. - the female osprey was "talking" as I approached the nest-- saw an osprey and a fledgling flying over the James River. They flew out of sight, and the female stopped "talking." It was a breezy, cloudy day -- a fledgling was seen at the edge of the nest, flapping its wings. Osprey "talk" was heard on the land side of the James River, near the nest, for the first time. There were 5 Canada Geese swimming in the James River, toward the Cedar tree with the nest. The chicks were jumping up and down in the nest, and flapping their wings. The male arrived with a small fish; there was lots of "talking" - the 5 geese flew off, up the James River. The female and chicks were observed as they were eating and "talking." The breeze and clouds continued throughout my observation time (1.5 hr.)

07/24/2019 by Rivergirl
It was 9:30 a.m., 75 degrees, sunny/clouds. The female was standing on the dead branch at the top of the Cedar tree. The nest is very deep; hard to know if there are 2 (maybe 3) chicks getting ready to fledge. . . Female was "talking" almost all the time today. An osprey was seen flying over the James River; the female flew off over the James, 2 other ospreys were also seen flying over the James. The chicks were down in the nest; breeze picked up. No adults at the nest, but two chicks were observed.

07/19/2019 by Rivergirl
At about 10 o'clock, the female and chicks were down in the nest; lots of talking! A crow came to a lower branch-then left. The work crew has not seen the chicks fledging. One chick was seen flapping its wings. The male was not seen/heard. There were about 1O Black Vultures seen at the landscape pier, about 3 houses up on the land side. . . WOW! There was not much activity at the nest today; the male wasn't seen, humidity was extremely high, temp. was about 90degrees. The female raised her wings a couple times, to give some shade.

07/16/2019 by Rivergirl
This morning, at 10 o'clock, it was about 85 degrees, hot, with high humidity. The female was at the nest, and the two chicks were observed in the nest, then they laid down. The male wasn't seen/heard. The chicks were spreading their wings - one picked up a stick in the nest, and threw it out! Both chicks then stood at the edge of the nest; Papa arrived with a fish, left it in the nest, and he flew to a landside tree. The chicks ate fish, Mama provided "shade" to them. The behavior of the chicks suggests they are ready to fledge! We'll see what happens next time I go to watch - over the weekend!

07/12/2019 by Rivergirl
Today, at 10 o'clock, it was cloudy, heavy breeze, and 80 degrees. The female was at the nest; both chicks were seen - they are growing! The female "talked" to the male, as he flew by on the James River. Workers at the friends' home said the adult ospreys had been "fixing" the nest with sticks. The female flew off; the chicks were down in the nest. She returned with a fish, and the chicks had breakfast! The male also flew in with a fish; left it and flew off again. The chicks are growing and may be ready for fledging soon! I talked with the wife at the home, and she said she thought one of the chicks had fledged on Tues. (three days ago). This is a busy Osprey family!

07/07/2019 by Rivergirl
Today, mid-morning, it was 85 degrees, cloudy, and lightly breezy. The female was standing on the upper left area of the nest; both chicks were seen-flapping their wings just a bit. The male flew to the nest -- he saw a small fish, went and grabbed it in the James River, then took it to a dead lower branch on the Cedar tree. The female was "talking" to him -- but he paid no attention to her. He ate the whole fish; none was taken to the nest. The chicks had been observed to be moving in the nest (maybe one of the adults had earlier brought a fish for the chicks and they were eating it when I arrived for my observation) . . .

07/05/2019 by Rivergirl
Today, at 10:00, it was sunny, breezy and 80 degrees when I started observation - 90 degrees at Noon when I was done. When I arrived at the nest, the female was standing on the left edge of the nest; she did a bit of "talking" and both chicks were seen. She flew off the nest, and down the James River. She quickly came back and stood to give shade to the two chicks. An eagle flew over, the male osprey flew toward the nest, with a fish, but it dropped into the James... The male got a small stick, took it to the nest, and then stood on a bare branch on the right side of the Cedar tree. The female flew out of the nest, found a fish, dropped it into the nest, and went to a bare branch at the top of the Cedar tree. She was preening; the chicks were "waving" their wings in the nest (getting ready for fledging??). Two parent ospreys and two fledglings were seen in the sky over the land/river, and, also, one eagle. I had some conversation with the folks who live at the home, where I go to observe the Ospreys. Their observations of the adults and chicks, over the past week, were similar to mine.

06/30/2019 by Rivergirl
We have had very high temp./humidity recently. This morning, about 8:45, it was sunny, with light clouds. I saw an eagle fly over the street, The Maine, as I was on my way to observe - it's been a week! The female flew to the nest, with a small stick for the nest. One chick observed at the nest! The female flew off -- chasing an eagle flying near the nest, on the James River. She flew to a top dead branch on the Cedar tree - breeze and sunlight are increasing. Both chicks were seen at the nest!! The female was preening on the top dead branch; she flew down to the nest -- the male arrived with a fish, to the same branch. She began feeding the chicks; they were observed doing a bit of wing flapping! Wind speed and sunshine increased. . . Male was "talking" as several Turkey Vultures were observed on the land side of the James.

Today, about 10:30, cloudy, light breeze, 72 degrees. I was able to see two chicks in the nest! There were 5 crows flying around - the female osprey "talked" - male not seen/heard. An eagle flew close and its mate flew up the James. There had been two adults kayaking in the James near the Cedar tree. . . Another kayaker came close to the Osprey nest, taking some photos! The female flew from the nest, toward the kayaker, "talked" a bit and flew back to the nest and sat on the nest-side. The male Osprey was not seen/heard in the hour of my nest observation time. The nestlings were interacting with each other, and occasionally looking out of the nest toward the James River.

10:30 Wed. morning, it was cloudy and 78 degrees. The female was standing at the nest, and the male flew to the nest, on the left -- a crow flew to a bottom branch. The female seemed to be feeding chicks - she flew out of the nest and up the James River - that's when I could see there were 1-2 chicks! Both adults flew off and got small branches to modify the nest. An eagle flew by the Cedar tree - the female "talked" and the eagle flew on by the nest. The male arrived with a small fish, and the female fed the chicks while the male stood on the branch to the left of the nest - he soon flew off over the James River.

06/16/2019 by Rivergirl
The female was at the left side of the nest this morning (there may have been a hatchling!). It was about 10:30, VERY windy, sunny, about 84 degrees. The male was on a full branch on the right side of the Cedar tree=first time I have seen him there! A hawk was flying by the nest, the male "talked nasty" to it and also chased away two birds flying close to the Cedar Tree nest. The female was sitting down in the nest - wind was picking up speed -- too risky for me to stay standing on the pier-rats!! Think I saw a chick in the nest, maybe. . . the male flew out over the James River, and was hunting for food. Given the wind speed, I had to shorten my observation time, sorry to say.

06/11/2019 by Rivergirl
Very breezy this morning, sunny, and 70 degrees. The male Osprey stood on a bare branch to the left of the Cedar tree. The female was standing in the nest, quietly (feeding chicks, maybe?). The nest is so deep, and out into the James River, it's impossible to see down into the nest - but female behavior is consistent with new chicks having hatched. . . A hawk flew, close, around the nest -- both Ospreys "talked/yelled" and the hawk did fly away! "Mama" remained in the nest, quietly standing, bending her head down into the nest, consistent with behavior I have seen in previous years. Project activity continues at the back of the home.

This morning it was very breezy and cloudy. The female was sitting in the nest; Starlings were making much noise at the pier and one Starling was standing on a branch above the nest. The female Osprey did some "talking" and the Starling flew away. After about 5-8 min. the female was standing in the nest, "talking" -- when the male flew to a lower bare branch of the tree with a fish. The female appeared to be incubating eggs -- the male flew around the tree with the fish, then back to the lower branch, and after eating a bit, took the fish to the nest, for the female!

06/03/2019 by Rivergirl
This morning, it was 70 degrees/sunny. The work crew at the home was at the back of the house, moving gravel. There was a music player being heard on the pier the whole time of my visit. The female was sitting in the nest - her behavior seemed consistent with nest incubation!. . The male and fledgling were not seen. I walked up to the marina -- no ospreys were observed. On my way down The Maine, I heard an osprey once, but didn't see it. The female was still sitting in the nest (incubation, perhaps??). The male and fledgling were not seen/heard. There were several starlings active on/near the pier today; the music player was quite loud.

05/30/2019 by Rivergirl
This observation was in the early evening - temp. was 90, cloudy. There were no ospreys seen/heard at the nest when I arrived, about 6:30p.m. I believe it was the fledgling that came and sat on a lower branch of the cypress tree. After sitting quietly for 10-15 min., it flew off, over the James River. The female was observed standing in the nest. An eagle flew from the James River toward The Maine (street). Two ospreys were observed flying over the James. No ospreys were seen at the nest, or in the cypress tree, except the female - she continued standing in the nest.

05/26/2019 by Rivergirl
Today, it was 80 degrees - 90 degrees on return, light breeze. The fledgling was on the left branch, doing "talking" and facing the street - The Maine. It flew up the James River a bit, then back to the Cedar branch, and into the Cedar tree. As I walked up The Maine, I saw and heard at least 4 ospreys at Lake Pasbehegh on the right side!! They were very active, fishing in the lake, and one flew to the James River. I didn't see an osprey nest, but several of the ospreys flew to a tree and landed, across the street from a neighbor's home on Lake Pasbehegh. As I walked back down The Maine, the fledgling flew to a bare branch on the Cedar tree. For 15 min., it did some "talking" and looking up the James River. The adults were not seen/heard.

05/21/2019 by Rivergirl
The female was seen on a left branch - preening. She then flew off, over the James River, and up the James, too. She flew so far up the James that I couldn't track her -- and she didn't fly back to the nesting area. The male and fledgling were not seen. There was a crew working at the back of the home, making a bit of noise with machines. The ospreys were not seen in the remaining time of my observation.

05/19/2019 by Rivergirl
Today in late morning, it was hot and sunny. The fledgling was on the same left branch as previously seen. The male was on a branch below the fledgling and flew off to the James River -- he dove twice down into the James, but not fish was caught. The fledgling flew up close to the nest. The male flew into the James River again, but no success. He came back to his previous branch, and preened. The female was observed standing in the nest. Their nest this year is quite large!

05/12/2019 by Rivergirl
The fledgling was on the left branch below the nest. Had seen an osprey adult flying over the James on my walk up The Maine. It was a very windy day, and cloudy. No adults were seen, but one was heard. The fledgling was pruning, as it sat on the branch to the lower left of the nest. I walked to 103 Curles Circle, to see if that nest was in use this year - the nest has been lost and not re-built. Walked back to The Maine -- Riverkids were not seen/heard, but the fledgling was still sitting on the left branch below the nest. It was a little more cloudy and the wind was getting higher. . . .

05/11/2019 by Rivergirl
The fledgling was seen on the left lower branch below the nest, again. The female flew to the nest and stayed-the male flew to the nest with small "sticks" and then flew to a branch in the tree. I talked with the homeowners and got their permission to go down to the pier, in the James River, so I can see the front of the nest facing the James, rather than only the back of this deep nest. This will help to track nest behavior!

05/06/2019 by Rivergirl
Walking up The Maine, the male was on a left branch below the nest. Couldn't see if the female was in the nest. I walked to the marina, and saw the osprey on the post in the James River again. No other ospreys were seen/heard. The osprey flew off the post and flew over the area of Lake Pasbehegh. Walking back down The Maine, and observing the Riverkids nest, a fledgling was seen on a branch beside the nest, on the left! It had been in the nest, and flew to the branch; may have been its first time out of the nest, based on its behavior. . .

04/29/2019 by Rivergirl
This morning it was cloudy, breezy and about 60 degrees at 9:00. The male flew to the nest, and then to the James River. The female was sitting down in the nest. The male flew back, with a small fish, took it to the female for a min. or two, then took the fish to a lower tree branch, in the cypress, and ate it. I walked to the marina, and saw a male osprey standing on a post in the James River. I have also seen a male Osprey in my backyard, sitting on a tree branch, with a fish -- this was occasional behavior last year, too.

04/24/2019 by Rivergirl
Both ospreys were at the nest. The male had just flown in, stayed a few minutes and flew off onto the James River. The female was standing at the edge of the nest. I walked around the yard, and will check with the owners about walking down to the pier, to get a better view of the nest and the ospreys.

04/21/2019 by Rivergirl
Today, it was sunny, breezy and 65 degrees at 10:30 a.m. The female was sitting on the left branch at the nest; male flew in with a branch for the nest. The nest faces the James River - I can't see inside the nest very well, or the overall nest design. On my return, I saw the female osprey in the nest, looking into the James River (more clouds & breeze). I went to the River to see if the Beachers had returned - no nest efforts or ospreys were seen. There were several people at the Beach - I spent 30 mins. talking with them about Osprey Watch & HRC of Master Naturalists.

On 4/18/19, it was very windy, temp. was 90 degrees - observation was at 4:00-5:00 p.m. The male was on an upper branch of the Cedar tree, in the James River. The female was in the nest. The male flew off after about 4-6 mins., and a few mins. later the female flew out of the nest. Two pairs of ospreys were seen flying over the James River - it was very windy. The female flew back to the nest and laid down.

04/14/2019 by Rivergirl
The female was initially observed on 3/26/19, sitting at the top of the tree in the James River. The male was seen, flying over the James. Nest-building efforts were seen on 4/1/19; the female was seen standing on a tree branch; male not seen that day. Both Ospreys were seen on April 6th and 10th! Evidence of nest-building was seen, too. On 4/13/19, both Ospreys were in the tree, the nest had been built, and it appeared that the female was lying down in the nest, and the male was on a branch above the nest.

08/23/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, the male osprey was observed, standing, on the same branch where the female was seen a few days ago. He was looking toward the land side, and there was work being done on the property, close to the James River. About 40 mins. later, he was still standing on the same branch -- there was a crow sitting on a lower branch on the right side of the tree! The humidity was low, there was light breeze, temp. in the 70's, and mostly sunny.

08/19/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, the female was again standing at the top of the Cypress tree, on the same branch, looking toward the James River. I watched for about 15 mins.,- no activity other than looking up/down the James, and toward the house (a couple times). On my way home, about 30 min. later, the female was still standing on the same branch - limited activity. Today, the weather was breezy, cloudy, and about 80 degrees.

08/14/2018 by Rivergirl
I have had a busy month! Today, there was an adult, a female (?), standing on a branch at the top of the Cypress tree and looking toward the James River! There was no evidence of a nest in the Cypress tree. . . . I stopped to look again, on my way home, but the osprey was gone. There was no activity in/near the Cypress tree. I will walk and watch again, in a couple days.

07/14/2018 by Rivergirl
I walked by the James River, and checked to see of there was any evidence of return of the Riverkids. No ospreys, eagles, crows, or other birds were seen. Construction at the riverfront has been continuing. Given some personal problems, I haven't had time to do much documentation; I have stopped by several times in the last month, on my morning walks, but have not seen the ospreys or other birds.

06/03/2018 by Rivergirl
No ospreys or eagles, or crows seen or heard today.

05/28/2018 by Rivergirl
Two crows were on a branch in the bottom of the cypress tree. No ospreys seen/heard.

05/26/2018 by Rivergirl
No ospreys or eagles seen in the area. I will check this site about every two weeks through the time of osprey activity - until mid-August.

05/22/2018 by Rivergirl
No nest-building, no ospreys/eagles seen or heard. It was cloudy and about 75 degrees.

05/19/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, no ospreys were seen/heard at, or near, the nest in the James River. It was windy and rain was sprinkling on my way down The Maine.

05/17/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, there were no ospreys, or eagles, seen in the nest or on the James River.

05/11/2018 by Rivergirl
No ospreys, or eagles, were seen at the nest on my way up The Maine, nor on my way home.

05/09/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, there was an eagle standing on a branch in the middle of the cypress tree. The eagles and ospreys have been chasing each other on/near the James River. No ospreys were seen today.

05/06/2018 by Rivergirl
An osprey was observed sitting on a branch at the top of the cypress tree where the nest has previously been. The family in the house said they have seen some nest-building efforts, but there has not been success.

04/30/2018 by Rivergirl
Today, no ospreys seen/heard and no re-building activity observed at the cedar tree in the James River.

04/27/2018 by Rivergirl
Female was at the cedar tree; some efforts with re-building the nest, but not much success. On my return down The Maine, one of the pair was standing on a branch and "talking" a bit - then flew off, up the James River. A pair of eagles was seen - one flew over the James, the other flew to the Riverkids nest, and then sat on a lower branch -- no further activity seen with the eagles or ospreys.

04/21/2018 by Rivergirl
There was a crow on the branch at the top of the tree of the former nest. No ospreys were seen or heard today

04/15/2018 by Rivergirl
No ospreys were seen/heard today. No evidence of nest-building in the tree. It was cloudy, breezy, and about 80 degrees.

04/12/2018 by Rivergirl
An adult was standing on a branch at the top right of the tree where the nest has been previously. There was no evidence of nest re-building. No human activity was occurring at the house or yard - roof work on the house next door, on the left, was being done and it was a bit noisy. On my return down The Maine, no ospreys were seen/heard at, or near, the previous nest area.

04/09/2018 by Rivergirl
An adult was the site of the old nest, eating a fish! Looks like nest re-building may take place. Some "talking" was heard. On my return down The Maine, both ospreys were at the "nest" tree! -- one near the top and the other on a branch to the right side. They were very quiet - no "talking" and no nest-building were observed.

04/05/2018 by Rivergirl
An osprey was observed flying in the area, by the James River. No observation of nest-building in the old tree or nearby. No activity observed on my return down The Maine.

03/31/2018 by Rivergirl
An adult was the top of the tree in the James River, did a bit of "talking" -- no nest building was observed. There were family members at the pier, fishing in the river.

03/22/2018 by Rivergirl
The nest was blown away in the heavy wind that occurred over the winter months. The new owners of the home have built a pier and done much redesigning of the property over the past year. No ospreys have been seen at the site of the previous nest, which was in the cypress tree for many years. We'll see if they return. . . .

08/31/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, there were no ospreys seen/heard at the nest, or in the neighborhood. I talked with neighbors who live close to the nest site, and they haven't seen/heard them either. I'll do an observation on Sept. 4th; migration may be in process.

08/28/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, both ospreys were seen at the nest! The female was on the branch at the top of the nest and the male was eating a fish on the lower left branch, where he has been previously observed. The female was "talking" consistently, and a young osprey was seen flying from the James River across The Maine (the street). On my way back down The Maine, about 30 mins. later, both adults were in their same positions in the cypress tree. The weather was much cooler and less humid today, which may be why the ospreys were seen at their nest this morning! And, there was much less construction noise at the property.

08/20/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was sunny and in the mid-80s. The last time both ospreys were seen at this nest was about 7/30. The construction work on this property has continued and has been quite noisy. Today was Sun., so the crew was gone - but no ospreys were seen/heard in the area of their nest on the James River. The male has been observed on a lower branch of the cypress tree; the female hasn't been seen since early August.

08/18/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was cloudy, very humid. I observed the nest about 9:45. The male was on a lower left branch of the cypress tree and. . . there were two crows sitting on the branch above the nest!! the yard work and work at the pier was very noisy today; the crows did fly off. On my way down The Maine later, the male osprey was in the same place; no osprey communication was observed/heard.

08/16/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was high humidity, very sunny, and temp. in the mid-80s. Ospreys were not seen or heard. There was lots of activity/noise at the house, pier, and yard today. On my way back down The Maine, I heard an osprey, but couldn't see it; don't know if it was one of the Riverkids.

08/12/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, we had steady rain in the morning and then it became sunny. About 11:45, I went to see the osprey nests. The Riverkids were not seen. There was lawn work being done, and the piers are close to being completed. However, none of the ospreys were seen. It was very humid today. I walked down to the marina and saw 5 Turkey Vultures in the dead tree at the edge of the marina, where I have seen them before. As I was leaving the marina, I saw and heard a female osprey, as she flew into a tree along the side of the marina.

08/09/2017 by Rivergirl
About 10 - 11 a.m., it was very sunny and no ospreys were seen/heard.

08/07/2017 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 9:30, there were a few sprinkles and some wind. The male was seen on a lower left branch of the cypress tree, and a fledgling was seen on a branch at the top of the tree. They were just sitting in the tree. 3-4 ospreys were seen on up the James River, and there were about four turkey vultures in the same area. None of the ospreys or vultures were seen to land.

08/04/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, the work at the pier was quite noisy, and there was lawn work being done close to the River. There are large masses of dirt being moved for the new landscape. Given the noise and the pier work, it was no surprise that the ospreys were not seen or heard today.

07/30/2017 by Rivergirl
Saw an osprey flying over the James River, but no ospreys at/near the cypress tree nest. Later, I saw/heard 2 ospreys, with fish. They didn't go to the cypress nest, so they may not have been the Riverkids/their fledglings. Today was sunny, breezy, and about 70 degrees, at 9:50 this morning. Next visit, I will spend more time at each nest; hopefully will see all four ospreys!

07/25/2017 by Rivergirl
7:30 a.m., breezy, 78 degrees. The female was standing at the top of the nest; male was on a lower branch, with a fish. She was "talking" to a fledgling - it was hunting on the James River. The male took a bit of fish to the female and they "talked" to each other. On my return, the female was standing on a lower branch of the cypress tree. She then flew to the nest and the male brought a fresh fish to the nest area; she ate and they "talked." Both fledglings were observed hunting on the James, with the parents "talking" to them.

07/18/2017 by Rivergirl
I walked up The Maine at 9:30 this morning; it was 80 degrees and very humid. No ospreys were seen/heard as I watched/waited in the yard next to the James River, where the nest is located. Later, I did see a fledgling, but no adult ospreys. There was lots of activity at the pier spot on the James, and work on the yard area that faces the river, too. I also saw an eagle flying up the James - toward their nest area.

07/13/2017 by Rivergirl
Today, it was 90 degrees about 4:00 - hot and humid. Pier work continues - lots of activity in the James River near the nest. Saw an osprey in the sky near the nest, think it was a fledgling. The female came to the branch above the nest, and the fledgling flew over the back yard - female was "talking" to it! The fledgling landed on a tree branch in the neighbors yard and then flew off down the James River.

07/09/2017 by Rivergirl
Low 90degrees, no clouds, 12:45 a.m. No ospreys were seen or heard. The pier development has been extensive and quite noisy. The ospreys were not heard/seen at the nest area, nor in/near the James River.

07/05/2017 by Rivergirl
The pier workgroup was at the property -- no ospreys were seen in the cypress tree or at the nest in that tree, and no activity or wind in the James River. Observation was about 30 mins. --nothing seen. On my return down The Maine, a new pier was seen on the left - there was a fair amount of noise by the pier crew, then it was quiet. No ospreys were seen/heard. About 10 min. later, the parent ospreys were seen above the James River, as pier work continued and there was noise and motion by the crew. Walking down The Maine, both of the Riverkids were observed at a cypress tree on an empty lot, at 164 The Maine. They were quiet and sitting on the top left branches of the cypress.

06/30/2017 by Rivergirl
The wind was strong, 80 degrees at 9:00 a.m. There were 6 turkey vultures flying around, and pier work remains in process. One fledgling was seen, and the female was the top branch above the nest, "talking" to the fledgling. The female then flew up the James River. Later, there was increased noise at the pier project, wind speed picked up -- an eagle with a fish was seen, and also a fledgling. I wonder if the eagle had taken the fish from the fledgling?? No adult ospreys were seen/heard.

06/27/2017 by Rivergirl
The pier is being worked on today; quite a bit of noise and movement there. No ospreys at the nest, or heard or seen in the area. On my way back down the James River, later, I saw what I thought were two fledglings, flying up the James. The male came and landed/sat on a lower branch of the cedar tree; no fish. He sat a few minutes, then flew off. There was no activity, no ospreys, or communication observed.

06/25/2017 by Rivergirl
It was hot and sunny today, at 10:00 when I went to observe the nest. The male was on a left branch, about midway down the tree. He was standing on the branch, very quietly. There was no construction today - very quiet. As I walked back down The Maine, the male was gone, the heat was increasing, and no ospreys were seen/heard at or near the nest area.

06/22/2017 by Rivergirl
One osprey was on the top left branch above the nest. It was very quiet and no other ospreys were seen. Construction at the home site has been ongoing and quite noisy at times. On my way down The Maine, the female was still on the same branch above the nest. The male flew to the nest, then flew off -- a bit of communication was heard between the two of them. The female flew to the nest - then back to the top of the nest. The fledglings were not seen today.

06/17/2017 by Rivergirl
An osprey was on the branch above the nest - preening, and looking to the James River. No communication/activity. The pier work is in progress. On my way home, the female was observed at the same branch above the nest. She did some "talking" as fledglings were seen flying along the James River. Turkey Vultures were also seen, flying above The Maine. Clouds were increasing--this was the day after the bad thunderstorm, with heavy rain.

06/13/2017 by Rivergirl
This morning, it was hot, humid, and sunny at 10:30. The female was on the left top branch above the nest, looking to the James River. Lots of pier work is being done, and a new patio, too. It was quite noisy and the male was not seen. On my way back down The Maine, a fledgling was on the branch where the female had been seen earlier. No activity was observed at the nest, or along the James River.

06/09/2017 by Rivergirl
The Pier is now under construction. Both adults were on a left lower branch, doing a bit of "talking" - a fledgling flew by, going up The Maine. When I returned to the nest site, after about 30 mins., the male was on the branch directly above the nest. The female was gone; there was no communication/activity observed. As I walked down The Maine, I did see an eagle with food, and 2 turkey vultures at the empty lot that's about two houses down from the Riverkids' nest. I shortened my observation time - was getting bitten by mosquitoes. . . .

06/07/2017 by Rivergirl
This nest is so deep, it's hard to know if my information is completely accurate -- but, I think there are two fledglings! Today, the female was on the branch directly above the nest and there were two fledglings flying up and down the James River. "Mom" was talking to them; one of the fledglings had a fish, flew by the nest and up the James. The female has remained on the same branch during observation time today; male not seen.

06/02/2017 by Rivergirl
There is now a machine, on a flat, wooden "plank", on the James River, for building a pier on this property. No activity or noise there today. Male was standing on a short branch, directly above the nest, and the female was standing in the nest (to give space for the chick(s) to move in the high heat). Later, the female was standing in the nest, with her wings spread open; the male was on the same branch he was on earlier. An eagle flew over the James, above the nest; the adult ospreys were very quiet and stood facing the James River.

05/30/2017 by Rivergirl
The male was on the left lower branch, with a fish, and the female was standing in the nest, "talking." Later, the male was still eating the fish, female was gone, and the chick was in the nest. Female showed up at the nest, with a fish!

05/28/2017 by Rivergirl
The osprey in the nest is a chick; the female was on the left upper branch, facing the James River. She flew out of the nest, returned and "talked", then flew out, and went down the James. She arrived back at the nest, but not with a fish. On my way home, the adults were both gone from the nest/cypress tree.

05/24/2017 by Rivergirl
It was cloudy, about 9:00, and we had had rain for at least 3 days. The female was sitting quietly in the nest; the male was seen over the James River. He came and landed on a branch above the nest-both were very quiet. He flew out to the James, got a fish and went to a lower branch to eat. The female was standing quietly in the nest; flew off -- there appeared to be a young fledgling in the nest! No further activity.

05/20/2017 by Rivergirl
The male was on a left, lower branch of the cypress tree, with a fish. He took the fish up to the female, standing at the nest, then went back to the same lower branch. The female was standing in the nest, and seemed to be engaging in feeding the hatchling(s). As I walked down The Maine, a bit later, the behavior of both adults was the same as seen earlier - he was eating a fish, she was in the nest, and seemed to be feeding the young chicks. It was a sunny day, light breeze, in the mid-70's.

05/17/2017 by Rivergirl
Female standing at the nest, think there are hatchlings - no male seen. This nest is so deep, it's hard to see the hatchlings, but the behavior of the female suggests there are hatchlings! It was about 70 degrees, and no wind. The observation was at 9:15. The male was on the left upper branch, preening, and the female was standing in the nest, looking landward. There was some "communication " from the female; the male flew down the James and was gone for some time. The temperature was rising. . .

05/13/2017 by Rivergirl
Observation was in later afternoon, cloudy, about 60 degrees. Male was on lower left branch, eating a fish - female was standing in the nest, her behavior suggested there were hatchlings. 20 min. later, the male was done eating, flew to a higher branch, then flew up the James River, came back and landed on the lower left branch, again. Female was standing quietly in the nest (no activity observed). Male flew up the James, got a fish, left it at the nest, and flew off again. The female was down in the nest, but could see her head, and some movement. I believe there are hatchlings in this nest.

05/09/2017 by Rivergirl
It was sunny, breezy early in the afternoon; the male was on a lower left branch, eating a fish. The female was in the nest, rotating eggs, I think, and doing some "talking." The male took a piece of fish to the nest, gave it to the female and he went fishing in the James River. The female was standing in the nest, the male arrived with a new fish, returned to the same branch under the nest, and ate the fish. The female was active at the nest; both were talking to each other. The female's behavior suggests the eggs may be hatching -- the nest is so deep, there isn't a way to know if there are hatchlings.

05/05/2017 by Rivergirl
The female was in the nest, incubating; male was on a lower left branch, eating a fish. On my way back down The Maine, the male was standing at the nest, the female was incubating down in the nest. Eagles and vultures flew by. . . . It was raining and I didn't stay to see what might have happened ( e.g., if the eagles and vultures re-appeared). I'll go again 5/9 to see what's happening!

05/02/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was hot, sunny, and the wind speed was quite high (close to 15-20 mph). The male was on a left branch below the nest, eating a fish. The female was seen down inside the nest, probably to protect the eggs from the wind speed. On my way back down The Maine, both of the ospreys had remained in the same place as before - female was down in the nest, and male was eating on the lower branch on the left. He later flew up to a branch on the left, at the top of the cypress tree, near the nest. The female was down in the nest, quite deeply, protecting the eggs. They will be hatching quite soon, maybe!

04/29/2017 by Rivergirl
An adult was at the nest (female, I think) and flew off -- a young bird chased the adult, followed it to the nest, and lit on a branch near the nest. Eventually, it flew away. The female came and was observed in the nest. She was incubating on my return down The Maine. The male arrived and stood directly above the nest and did some "talking". It was almost Noon, sunny, and about 80 degrees.

04/26/2017 by Rivergirl
Female incubating; male on lower left branch of the cypress tree, with a fish. Both were quiet. Later, on my way home, the male was at the nest, raising his wings as he stood on the edge of the nest. It was getting more cloudy; the female was laying in the nest. Male flew down the James River, and came back to the nest with a fish. Both adults were standing in the nest; sprinkling began. Temp. about 60 degrees.j

On my return down The Maine, the female was incubating in the nest; the male was not seen or heard.

04/14/2017 by Rivergirl

On my way down The Maine, the female was standing at the nest, looking down into the nest (at the eggs, I imagine). The male was on the left lower branch.

04/10/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was breezy, about 70 degrees. The female was standing at the nest; the male arrived with a fish for her! She flew down to a branch on the left, and ate her breakfast! He remained above the nest. On my return, both were at the nest, talking, and standing quietly, and looking at the James River. Egg laying in progress, maybe?

04/07/2017 by Rivergirl
Today was very windy, and cloudy. The female was observed on a branch below the nest; the male flew to the nest. Both ospreys left the nest and two other ospreys were observed flying over the James River - there were lots of waves and the wind was high at the river. I observed the nest this morning - no ospreys, so they have migrated.

09/07/2016 by Rivergirl
Today, no ospreys were observed or heard in the late afternoon, about 5:00. I believe they have migrated. I'll track one more day, on Sept. 9th.

There was an osprey on the top branch, at the right of the nest. Later, an adult was seen with a fish on a lower limb of the tree.

08/21/2016 by Rivergirl
Both adults seen at the nest. One flew off, got a fish, and was chased by a pair of eagles. The eagles flew off and the osprey returned to the nest - without the fish! On my way back down The Maine, an adult was on the branch above the nest. It began "talking", but then stopped. No other activity observed at the nest or in the James River area.

08/01/2016 by Rivergirl
An adult osprey was on the branch above the nest, just like yesterday. Talked with a builder who is working on home improvements, he has not seen young ospreys. He and I both saw two eagles flying up the James River near the house. The adult was at the top of the nest, again, when I walked down The Maine.

07/31/2016 by Rivergirl

On my return, the female was above the nest, flew off and returned within 2 min. Male was on a branch below the nest, on the left. Behavior suggests there are one, or more, hatchlings!

05/29/2016 by Rivergirl
Both adults were on branches at the nest; it's too deep to see hatchlings. . . . The adults flew to the nest, "talked" and then one of them flew off. On my way back down The Maine, the male was observed at the rear of the nest - quite hot outside today.

05/26/2016 by Rivergirl

05/19/2016 by Rivergirl
Today, one adult was on a branch above the nest, the other was in the nest. There was clearly "conversation" between the adults - the female may have talking to hatchlings in the nest?

05/16/2016 by Rivergirl
Breezy and sunny; observation at mid-day. Female on the side of the nest; male arrived with a fish. The two adults "talked" and male flew to a branch with the fish! They continued "talking." This nest is very deep; I suspect there are hatchlings, but they can't be observed.

On 8/26, there were no ospreys at the nest, as observed for 15-20 mins. Today, about 8:40, there was an eagle standing on the edge of the nest!! After about 5-7 mins., the eagle flew off over the James River. I couldn't see where the eagle went, but it seemed to be flying up the James.

8:30 There were two ospreys at the nest, an adult above the nest, and a fledgling, I believe, slightly below the nest. The young osprey flapped its wings and flew to another area of the tree where the nest is located.

About 7:30, there were two ospreys at the nest -- one was on a branch below the nest, the other on a branch slightly above the nest. I think the one below the nest may be a fledgling, given its size and coloring differences. They didn't move in the course of a 10-15 min. observation.

This morning, about 8:30, there were no adult ospreys seen at the nest, and no activity in the nest (although this one is interestingly shaped and seems to have more space available on the river side of the nest. After about 15 mins., an adult flew into the nest - couldn't see if he had a fish, since I didn't have my binoculars up to my eyes at that moment. As has happened previously, when I have seen an adult fly into the nest, there was no observable activity in the nest, because of the shape of the nest, I assume. Watched 5-8 more mins.; didn't see any activity.

Today was the second observation in the last four days. Today, one osprey was on a branch slightly above the nest, and the other was on a branch below the nest. Nothing was seen within the nest; however, a resident at the site said she had seen a "young" osprey earlier this week. I observed about 15-20 mins. today, but didn't see a bird in the nest. The osprey on the lower branch was quite a bit smaller than the one on the top branch, but the feathering appeared to be the same as an adult, which is not what I have seen in bird books. I'll observe again in 1-3 days.

About 8:45 this morning, there was one osprey at the nest, on a branch next to the nest. No activity seen within the nest.

08/05/2014 by Rivergirl
At about 10:15 this morning, one osprey was sitting at the top of the nest, looking out over the water, and down into the nest. Same behavior about half an hour later. I assume it was the female, waiting for the male to bring breakfast! No activity observed inside the nest.

08/03/2014 by Rivergirl
About 9:10 this morning, and again about 10:30, one osprey was sitting at the edge/in the nest. This is a deep nest -- I think there may be hatchlings. The female was "talking" and looking into the nest. I couldn't see any activity, but the behavior appears to be consistent with what I remember from 10 yrs. ago when I used to see osprey nests at Midland Farm Swamp, nearby.

Both ospreys were at the nest; one was standing in the nest, looking constantly down into the nest. I couldn't see any nestlings, but the osprey behavior appeared to be that of a "parent." Watched twice, 10 min. per visit, at about 6:50 and 7:40 this morning.

07/28/2014 by Rivergirl
Both ospreys were in the tree, one below the nest and the other sitting on the edge of the nest, looking into it. I think there is a hatchling, but I need to spend more time watching.

07/22/2014 by Rivergirl
At 7:30 this morning, both adults were perched at the edge of the nest, looking down into it. Maybe there are hatchlings, though none were observed.

07/18/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 8:00, one osprey was at the edge of the nest, and the other osprey flew into to the nest and remained. Both seemed to be focused on the nest -- maybe there are nestlings, but I couldn't see even the adult osprey in the nest, thought I had seen it fly into the nest!

07/14/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 9:00, there was one adult, standing at the edge of the nest. The adult looked at me, down inside the nest, and onto the river. No activity observed within the nest, but maybe it's too far away.

07/11/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 7:00, there were no adults seen in, or near, the nest. No activity was observed within the nest.

This morning, about 7:00, both ospreys were at the nest, one in the nest and the other a couple branches lower, but close. I'm not sure if there were two "nest invaders-one here and the other at the Lakers", but the situation was the same, i.e., an osprey invaded the nest/osprey, and then went airborne and flew around, making lots of "noise" and diving in toward the nest, again, for about 30 mins. I have never seen this behavior, at this time of the season. It is also of note that there has been a young osprey in a dead tree in my backyard, for about a week, with a schedule of sitting on a branch from 6:30-7:30 A.M. for a couple hours, then leaving -- and coming back in the afternoon to the same branch and staying until dark. One day, there was another osprey, with a fish, who perched on a branch just below where the other one was, and ate the fish. It was not shared, and the higher osprey didn't "go after" the fish-eating osprey. It could not be determined if there are nestlings in the Lakers' nest, or the Riverkids 'nest.

About 7:30 this morning, there was an adult perched at the nest, with the same behavior at 6/30. No activity could be observed, except that of the adult.

06/30/2014 by Rivergirl
One of the adults was at the nest, perched on the rim, and spending time looking down into the nest -- observation time was 2X10 min. each. I wonder if there are hatchlings?. . . .

06/27/2014 by Rivergirl
Both adults were at the nest, one just above it and the other on a lower branch. No activity noticed.

06/23/2014 by Rivergirl
Same behavior as 6/20, at about the same time of the morning. No preening, but both were checking out the nest.

06/20/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, about 7:30, both adults were at the nest, on branches slightly above the nest. Both were preening and enjoying each other and looking into the nest.

06/18/2014 by Rivergirl
Today, about 6:30 A.M., both parents were near the nest, on branches just below it. Each one had a fish and was eating. No activity was seen within the nest - however, it is deep and I can't get very close. . . .

06/15/2014 by Rivergirl
Both ospreys were at the nest this morning, about 10:00. One was eating a fish, the male, I think. The mother, I think it was her, was standing in the nest.

06/12/2014 by Rivergirl
It appears that extra material has been added to the nest. Neither osprey was at the nest. I'll go a bit later next time and hope to see at least one of the adults. . . .

06/08/2014 by Rivergirl
At 9:20 this morning, there were no adults at the nest, and no activity seen within the nest.

06/04/2014 by Rivergirl
This morning, both adults were at the nest. The female was eating a fish, on a branch. The male was one branch down, off to the left of the female. No nest activity was observed.

06/02/2014 by Rivergirl
Today, there were no ospreys at the nest (9:15, 9:35). No activity seen in the nest.

05/30/2014 by Rivergirl
My computer has been out for a week -- I have been watching this nest and one of the ospreys was at the edge of the nest, looking inside. Perhaps there are hatchlings!

05/19/2014 by Rivergirl
Today, I talked with a resident who observes these ospreys. She has seen activity, and I saw some, too, today -- both parents were in the nest, so this may be hatchling time!

05/16/2014 by Rivergirl
Clutch hatching has not occurred - mama was sitting very quietly in the nest (incubation).

05/11/2014 by Rivergirl
I thought I typed all the information in, a few min. ago, but it hasn't shown up yet. What I thought were "hatchlings" on 5/2 was mama sitting on the eggs, and papa sitting on a branch. Today, I could see it was mama's head I had mistaken for a "hatchling" - I apologize for my first year of Watch, and not having big binoculars for viewing the ospreys.

05/07/2014 by Rivergirl
I obviously didn't get the incubation info correct! I saw one hatchling, for the second time, again today. Neither adult was at the nest.

05/02/2014 by Rivergirl
This is my first year of osprey-watch - I think I saw a nestling raise its head! Mama was on a branch, just below/beside the nest.

04/30/2014 by Rivergirl
The mama is incubating, I think.

04/25/2014 by Rivergirl
Today, the mom was not laying down in the nest, but was at the edge of it, standing and looking in the nest. Maybe there are nestlings - we'll see!

04/21/2014 by Rivergirl
Today, mama is sitting on the eggs, and papa flew to the nest, with fish in his claws, and landed -- to feed mama!

04/17/2014 by Rivergirl
Today, at 9:30, the female appeared to be incubating eggs. The male was feeding her. I had binoculars, but am not quite sure if the eggs are being laid, or incubated. Incubated is my guess, based on the info about incubation.

04/12/2014 by Rivergirl
At 5:00 P.M., the nest was empty, but it looks great! I think the tree may be live; we'll see. . .

04/07/2014 by Rivergirl
This has been an active nest for 5-7 yrs.; but not last year, I don't think . . . Nest building began March 31st this year. I walk and see the nest several times a week - progress is being made!
