Nesting Diaries
10:38 AM - Osprey at cell tower. 52°F
Osprey never come back due to large wake of turkey vulture took over the nest site.
I think this nest is a failure due to black vultures were/are rooting on the utility pole. At this time, I do not see any osprey at the pole at all. Hope they find new place to build the nest without any interruption.
I am not sure if this nest still active. I drove on I 64 and saw so many black vultures around the nest.
Drove on I 64 W saw one osprey flew over the nest.
Drove past the nest around 20:15, saw one osprey was in the nest. Other one flew around and perched at the nest.
09:50 saw one osprey perched beside its nest.
At 15:50 drove past the nest via I 64, saw one osprey in the nest.
At 10:15 two ospreys were in the nest. A little while later, one flew away. Around 11:35 saw one osprey flew around the area.
Drove pass the nest via I 64W in late morning, did not see any osprey today.
Visited the nest in late evening around 19:15, saw one osprey got up from the nest and perched on the pole. It was nice to see at least one osprey today.
I found the way to see this nest from the ground today. This pole is located close to Saunders Elementary school in Newport News. There is nice opened field from school toward the tower. I saw one osprey flew and tried to chase crows and black vultures away from the nest. I couldn't see if another one was in the nest due to sun shone in my eyes.
It is hard for me to report this nest. The pole locates by I 64. There is no place to stop to watch it properly. I will try to report as I travel past the nest. I've seen ospreys in this nest every year.
