Nesting Diaries

The fledgling was last observed on 7/22/14. I'm sad to report that something has happened to it. Since this date we have not seen it and mom is quite upset. She has been squawking day and night and circling the nest in hopes that her young chick will return. Dad doesn't seem to concerned.

We have had a platform nest since 1999. It has always been occupied. Last year after the pair left (no fledglings) the platform and nest fell into the water. My husband rebuilt it in Feb. 2014. The pair was late returning this year (probably because of the cold winter here). We usually spot the male at the end of Feb. This year all has gone well and we have 1 fledging. There are 2 other nest fairly close to our nest; 1 is about 500 yards downriver and it has 1 fledgling and the other is about 200 yards upriver and has 1 fledgling. Our nest sits in the middle. Last night I saw one of our birds sitting with the birds downriver. There were 4 birds on the nest. Are they all related or just having a party?

The first picture I posted was taken on 6/19/14. Off to the upper there is a dolphin swimming by.
