Nesting Diaries
She is now and finally sitting on the edge of the nest. This has been a tricky nest, since the original was replaced a little further away and on a platform built for (what seems like) 2 nests.
We have not seen any activity at this nest for awhile. We were waiting awhile to see if maybe she was hunkered down and incubating, but we are having doubts now. If there is no activity soon, we'll call this a failure. Maybe the pair did not like the new platform.
The original nest, which was HUGE last season, was torn down over the Winter. A platform was put up a few yards from the original spot. It looks big enough for 2 nests, but the pair is currently only using part of the platform.
The original nest was torn down and a platform was built nearby. We'll see what happens when the pair arrives this season. This was a huge nest!
There are 2 chicks in this huge nest.
Osprey has been sitting on the edge of the nest. One day, she was eating and leaning down as if feeding a chick.
Incubation is going on, no doubt. We can barely see the top of her head.
She appears to be incubating, as all we have seen the last few trips by is the top of her head.
This nest is off to an early start. Both birds were at the nest on March 7th.
There was one chick sitting on the nest yesterday, but today it is nowhere to be found. Sometimes, we see the adults of this nest sitting in a nearby tree, during incubation time. No sign of anyone in or near the nest today.
Definitely one chick, possibly two.
There were 3 osprey in this nest the other day, so not sure if there is one or 2 chicks. Again, huge nest that is built very high over the years. This is one of the lucky ones that never got blown apart with the winter or spring winds.
Chick is getting easier to see. Problem with this nest is that by time we can see it good, it's about time to fledge. Some years, it fledges in-between our checks.
We could see the chick stretching its' head up today!!
Female sitting in the nest with her wings bent over in protection pose!! It's been very hot here. Good sign!!
Both ospreys were in this nest today, sitting higher up. Good sign!
As deep as this nest is, one osprey was sitting up higher. Normally, I can't see them in the nest. But since I can now see one, I'm going to assume there is a chick.
We call this nest the McMansion, as it is getting bigger and bigger every year. This male must be in the "Osprey construction" world!
I'm assuming there is a chick in this nest, as the adult has been sitting on the edge for awhile now. It's a huge nest, so we won't see any chicks until later.
This nest was successful in 2019, but the osprey parents rebuilt the nest at the other end of the billboard sign. It will be interesting to see which nest (which end of the sign) they choose this year.
There was one osprey on this nest March 9th. Last year, they had one successful fledgling. There is talk of a business moving to this location and building. Hoping not during the season!!
This is a new nest we saw awhile back and have been watching. We only see one Osprey, but it has been sitting on the very narrow nesting area for several weeks. We didn't know for sure that it would stay, as the nest material keeps falling off and it appears too narrow from the vantage point of the highway.
