Nesting Diaries

Was out on the water today. No osprey in sight at all.

09/11/2017 by GM
Over the last few weeks, I've only seen two osprey in the area where there used to be at least 6. Some of the bald eagles in the area have begun to hang out in and around the abandoned osprey nests.

08/20/2017 by GM
Three osprey still in the area.

07/13/2017 by GM
Observed nest intermittently from around 815am to 9 am. All three young osprey and both adults observed during this time, in and around the nest. One of the young females was observed bringing a whole fish to a branch to eat. I did not see the osprey catch the fish, but I believe that she caught it on her own.

07/09/2017 by GM
Observed nest again from approximately 7 am to 10 am. One of the female young took a fish from the nest (brought in before I arrived) and took it to a tree to eat. Later in the morning the young osprey were again seen practicing fishing.

07/08/2017 by GM
Observed nest on and off from between 7 am and 10 am. All three young osprey are out of the nest and flying. During the course of the morning, two of the young osprey were seen practicing fishing by diving towards and into the water.

06/28/2017 by GM
Observations around 6 am and 9 am. Female adult and all three nestlings in the nest. I was told by another photographer that the female adult had brought in a fish for the nestlings around 530 am, and that they (the nestlings) were no longer being mouth fed by the adult female. None of the other photographers has yet seen any of the nestlings fly on their own yet. Male adult was perched on a nearby tree.

06/21/2017 by GM
Observations from about 7 am to 9 am. Observed all three nestlings in the nest. At least two were testing out their wings, and one was flapping his/her wings and giving a little hop into the air. Female adult was present much of the time and the adult male brought in one fish during the time that I was watching the nest.

06/15/2017 by GM
Observed nest around 7 am. Female adult and two nestlings present. Have not seen the 3rd nestling for quite some time. Male seen in nearby tree with a fish.

06/13/2017 by GM
Observed nest around 10 am. Both adults present and nestlings occasionally were observed stretching their wings. Another photographer that had been there longer indicated she saw the female adult bring in at least one fish for the nestlings.

06/08/2017 by GM
Observed the nest starting around 7:00 am. Mother and three nestlings were present. One of the nestlings was observed stretching his/her wings. Mother departed nest on two occasions, once to bring back a fish and a second time to bring back a branch to build up the nest.

06/06/2017 by GM
Returned to observe nest around 3:30 pm today. Observed all three nestlings in the nest. Mainly watched over by the female. Male returned with a fish and placed it into the nest. (see photo) The nestlings were observed stretching their wings.

06/06/2017 by GM
Two nestlings observed in the nest. A photographer that had been watching the nest indicated he could see three nestlings through his zoom lens (my camera battery had died). Both parents present, and one of the parents was observed bringing a fish to the nest. Observations made at approximately 9:15 am.

05/20/2017 by GM
Single female osprey sitting on nest. Another photographer that was at the nest indicated that she had seen the male flying around.

05/04/2017 by GM
One osprey observed sitting low in the nest. Second osprey was eating in a tree about 20 yards away. Observations made around 9:00 am.

05/02/2017 by GM
Male and female osprey observed in the nest. They appeared to be eating. Approximately around 3:45 pm.

04/30/2017 by GM
One osprey observed (well at least the osprey's head) sitting low in the nest. One osprey (see photo) observed the same day eating in a nearby tree. Unknown if this was the same osprey that later went to the nest or if this was a different osprey. Observed nest around 9:30 am.

This year there was only one chick - a female. She fledged sometime between Friday July 1 and Tuesday July 6. I observed her flying on July 6.

03/29/2015 by Squirrel Girl
I visited the nest and another photographer there said the male is named "Pops."

03/17/2015 by Squirrel Girl
On Facebook, someone posted a photo of the osprey mating on 17 March 2015

03/15/2015 by Squirrel Girl
I posted a "Nest Activity Report with the nest occupied by a male and female on 03/15/2015. I don't know what day they actually arrived by both birds were there on the 15th.

after more than a week saw first babies yesterday

06/18/2013 by schmeelcke
two fledglings in the nest. One was gone this morning so guessing it finally flapped over the edge and took the leap. The most mature young I have seen between Woodbridge and Alexandria.

Two nestlings visible

04/08/2012 by xyk
2012 arrival date was likely between March 17 and March 25.
