2012 Stick nest on Channel Marker 12, near the mouth of Queens Creek, off the point at New Quarter Park, York County, VA. 7-8-2013 - An osprey pair was seen standing on the nest. 6-14-13 - The female osprey was seen standing on the nest. 5-31-13 - A female osprey was perched on the side of the nest. She left the nest for approximately 25 minutes and returned with a fish, which she began to eat shortly after. She did NOT reach into the nest to feed chicks. No male present during 2 hours of observation. Recorded the nest as a failed nest. 5-26-13 - A female osprey was observed standing on the nest, when a second osprey flew in, landed on her back, and appeared to copulate with her. He left shortly after. She ate, tearing pieces from a fish in the nest. It wasn't clear if the fish was there prior to the male's arrival or not. Nor is it clear if this is the original pair that built this nest or another pair that may be contemplating a nesting attempt. The male of this pair appears to be browner in coloration than the original osprey that built the nest. - 5-19-13 - There were no osprey on the nest. The other three in the area were occupied. It does appear that this nest has failed, but will check again in a few days. Note: the male has not been observed visiting the nest for at least the last 10 days of observation. 5-17-13 - The female was standing to the side of the nest picking pieces from a fish and eating them. We were unable to determine whether she has chicks or not - she did not feed inside the nest while we were there. The nest was undamaged from a severe wind storm the previous night. 5-15-13 - The female osprey stood on the nest, with one wing slightly extended, possibly shading a chick. She stepped slowly and carefully in the nest. She called repeatedly and was obviously disturbed by a mature eagle flying overhead. The male did not return during the 40 minutes I watched. 5-13-17 - The female was standing inside the nest. There appeared to be a slight movement next to her left leg, but it could have been wind ruffling her feathers. She called frequently. Several osprey were flying in the area. The male did not return. 5-9-13 - The female was no longer sitting on the nest incubating, but standing on the side of the nest looking all around. She did not move on to the nest, but we were unable to see if there was a problem in the nest. 4-18-13. The male was observed sitting on the nest incubating. The female returned and perched on the side of the nest. Soon afterward another osprey flew low over the nest. The male flew towards the intruder, as did the osprey from the neighboring Marker 14. The female preened for a time before resuming incubating. 4-7-2013. The female was perched alone in an incubating position in the nest. 4-1-2013. Two osprey were perched together on the nest. The pair copulated (very brief contact) and the male flew away. 3-29-13. Two osprey were together on the nest. The nest is large with sticks spilling down the pole. The male flew off. No indication of eggs or incubation. 3-22-13. Two osprey were seen together on the nest. It was very windy with many other osprey in the air. 3-17-2013. One osprey was perched on the stick nest which has grown since 3-14-2013. A second osprey joined the osprey on the nest and copulation occurred. The male left shortly afterwards. 3/14/13 - Two birds were observed sitting together on the beginnings of a nest. The male left and returned with some sticks which the female positioned in the nest, 3-9-2013 - An osprey was perched on Marker 12, site of an active nest that fledged two chicks in 2012. Even with a scope I couldn't sex the bird as the side of the triangular marker obscured its neck and breast. Another osprey, a male, was perched alternately on the nearby Markers 14 and 13. The bird did not appear to respond to the calls of the bird on Marker 14. A third osprey flew in and joined the one on Marker 12. It did not gain a foothold and both birds struggled and flapped their wings, until one flew off and the other fell into the water. It wasn't clear if this was a territorial dispute over a potential nest site or a pair attempting to copulate - there was no sign of pair bonding and nestbuilding. After circling for a time, the original bird settled back on the marker, while the second bird flew up Cub Creek. 2-21-13 - First adult osprey observed on Queens Creek . . © 2013 .
