The ospreys have not bee chased off, but rather have been busy. The nest is almost complete, but I watched the two going back and forth collecting more sticks and brining them back to the nest.
A fair amount of new nest material has been deposited on the tower platform since last week, but it looks pretty disheveled, with no nest shape. No ospreys observed over a 45 minute period. The nearby eagles (1/4 mile away) may have chased them off.
This Coast Guard ATON tower has been swept clean of all nest material. This looks like human activity to remove the nest. There is no sign of any of the old nest material, but the damaged ATON sign board on the tower that I reported to the C.G. has been repaired, obviously by the USCG.
2 adults observed on tower above (no on) the nest. New grass observed in the nest bowl. No sign of eggs or chicks.
When the adult eagle on a nest 1/4 away flew by hunting a fish, the ospreys left the nest tower.
This nest is only 410 yards away from an active bald eagle nest. The eagles have already chased ospreys off a nest further away, so it will be interesting to see if they allow this pair of ospreys to nest. On 4/15/17, the 2 ospreys were observed nest building on the ATON.
